STRONG VOICES UPDATE: New Theatre Royal and Redwood Park School collaborate on creative storytelling project

A performance by Filskit Theatre at Portsmouth Festivities provided a starting point for collaboration between New Theatre Royal and Redwood Park School.

Filskit are an all female ensemble with a passion for micro projection. They use innovative technology to create work that ignites the imagination. Their shows combine music with shadow work, light and movement.

Redwood Park is a Portsmouth School for young people with moderate learning difficulties. Almost all of the students at Redwood Park were able to attend a performance of the Feather Catcher a Filskit show originally conceived for pre school audiences.

Artsmark Conference Teaser Quiz

Last month's question:

Q. One of our workshops will explore a major European programme that has been running for over 20 years  and you can join in. So...What is ‘Le Cinéma, cent ans de jeunesse’?

A. In 1995, the Cinémathèque Française set up a young people’s film-making programme to celebrate the centenary of cinema. The programme had a specific approach and working method which is still going strong nearly 20 years later.

Firstly, all the young people involved in the programme follow the same process: to make films that respond to an aspect of film language.  Second, the programme is very tightly structured into exploratory exercises and the production of a final ‘film essai’.  Thirdly, there is a comprehensive ‘viewing curriculum’ of clips taken from the history of cinema and from around the world. Fourth, each workshop is run by a film-maker and a teacher, each with particular responsibilities.

Michelle Cannon will be running a workshop based on these principles at the Artsmark Conference and will explore the 'Lumière minute'. Bring your iPad/tablet along on the day to join in!

This month's teaser question...

Q. What is a Zine?

STRONG VOICES UPDATE: SV took part in this year’s Children’s Art Week (June 16th-22nd)

"This project has been a great stepping-stone in developing a long-term partnership with Mary Rose Academy. Working with new groups of young people can often be a challenge, but particularly so with SEN groups as it often takes more time to understand their individual needs."
