On 1st October it became illegal for anyone to smoke in a vehicle with a person under 18 present. This marked a landmark day, not just for the thousands of children that the law will help save from the devastating impact of secondhand smoke, but for everyone in public health that has worked so tirelessly to make this ban a reality. In addition to smokefree cars, it also became illegal for adults to buy tobacco on behalf of someone under 18 (proxy purchasing) which also applies to electronic cigarettes, meaning it's now even harder for children to access tobacco and nicotine delivery devices. Hi , welcome to your September eNews.
October 1st was another landmark date in our work together on tackling tobacco. New measures will now make it harder for children to smoke and also less likely that they will suffer from secondhand smoke, as smoking in cars with children present becomes illegal.
Every week an estimated 430,000 children suffer from secondhand cigarette smoke in cars. Because their fragile lungs are much smaller and they breathe faster, children suffer much more from secondhand smoke than adults.
Congratulations to everyone that played a role in raising awareness of the importance of smokfree cars and helped create this law. We now need to make sure the law is enforced properly, and people are aware of the consequences.
