Join the CHS Walk in Her Shoes Team

The whole school community is invited to join Crofton House School’s team at the CARE Canada Walk in Her Shoes event on Sunday, March 8. This family-friendly event begins with a kick-off at Creekside Community Recreation Centre from 8:30 am to 9:30 am. Starting at 10:00 am, participants will walk 10,000 steps, the number of steps that represents the typical distance girls and women in developing countries have to travel each day to collect essentials for survival like firewood and water – tasks that often prevent girls from being able to attend school. All funds raised will go towards CARE Canada's Malawi project supporting healthy moms and babies. View more information about this initiative. The event is free for youth under 17 and $25 for those over 17. Join the team.

School Birthday Celebration

The School's Birthday assembly will be held on Friday, March 6. This is a celebration for students, past and present, and with all current students and alumnae in attendance Manrell Hall is filled to capacity. Unfortunately, we are not able to accommodate parents in the audience. Also important to note, dismissal time for students on March 6 is 11:30 am.

Reduced Uniform Shop Hours for February

Starting February 18, the Uniform Shop will be operating on an adjusted schedule and will only be open 11:30 am to 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm to 4:15 pm on:

  • Tuesday, February 18

  • Tuesday, February 25
  • Thursday, February 27

The Store will resume its regular hours on Tuesday, March 3.

Making No-Sew Blankets for Donation

As part of the Ivy Compass program, Junior and Senior School students were invited to sign-up to help make “no sew” blankets with fabric donated from local company Lunapads. The soft, colourful blankets will be donated to the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre. At lunchtime, Senior School students met in the Rounda and science rooms and started the blankets.

During Junior School lunch, the blanket activity was carried on by Grade 4 and 5 students.

Languages Celebration Week

January 27 to January 31 was Languages Celebration Week in the Senior School with a different activity scheduled each day. On Monday, there was a ribbon dance lesson in the gym. On Tuesday (pictured), students and staff contributed to a display in the Senior School foyer, sharing a meaningful heritage celebration. There was a clear theme among the contributions – our most meaningful heritage days are the ones where we spend time with family.

On Wednesday, there was an open mic with cultural sharing in Manrell Hall. Thursday (pictured), students made crepes. Friday, staff and students were invited to wear a heritage outfit.

CHS Exchange Program

Our exchange students have arrived at their host schools. During their exchange, students will be writing guest blogs for the school website. This week, two Grade 10 students, Shae and Gabrielle, share their first impressions of St. Hilda’s School in Queensland, Australia.

Grade 6/7 Discovery Sharing

Grade 6 and 7 shared their Discovery Projects with each other. Discovery is a component of the Applied Design Skills and Technology curriculum in the Junior School Middle School where students gain applied, hands-on experience. The projects require students to research, apply creativity, problem solve, and reflect, within the context of the learning. Students can participate in one of eight modules Future Builders (pictured), Jewelry, All the World’s a Stage, Let’s Code, Comic Book Creation, Scrapbooks, Keep it Calm, or Video Production.

Learning the Storytelling History of Hula

Dr. Candace Kaleimamoowahinekapu Galla, an associate professor at UBC and hula master, visited the Grade 7 class for a week long instruction in the storytelling history of hula in Indigenous Hawaiian culture. She spoke of Mary Kawena Pukui, a revered scholar, dancer, and performer, and taught students the hula to Ke Ao Nani (The Beautiful World). The week culminated in all 60 Grade 7 students coming together to perform the dance.

Lunar New Year Celebrations in the Junior School

Junior School students experienced a traditional Lucky Lion Dance to celebrate the Lunar New Year and to bring luck and prosperity to the coming year.

Grade 6 students had a visit from a sugar painter. Sugar painting is a traditional Chinese folk art using liquid sugar to create beautiful and intricate two-dimensional pictures.

Stong’s Donation

The CHS Parents’ Auxiliary graciously acknowledges a donation from local grocery store Stong’s this past December through their on-line rebate program. Did you know Stong’s donates 4% of their online purchases to the shoppers’ school of choice? These donations go towards programs and events that support the CHS school community. Thank you Stong’s!

Father-Daughter Bingo

Thank you to the organizers and volunteers for another successful Father-Daughter Bingo. These events, sponsored by the Parents’ Auxiliary, provide lasting memories and help build a stronger school community.
