New professional learning resource for secondary teachers: Science by DoingThe Australian Academy of Science has released a new professional learning module for secondary school teachers that explores the Science as a Human Endeavour strand. The module is intended to provoke professional discussion and build understanding. It unpacks the vital role this strand plays in contextualising human dimension in science — in both its historical and contemporary sense — for students. The module is designed to be used by individuals and groups and would provide a great stimulus for staff development. Science by Doing is a comprehensive online science program for years 7–10, and is freely available to all Australian students and teachers through Scootle. The program provides teacher and student guides, supplemented with digital resources that cover all elements and content descriptions of the Australian Curriculum: Science. A complete list of Science by Doing resources in Scootle are available here and here. Recognising teacher qualityDuring his acceptance speech at the 2018 Australian Local Hero Awards, Eddie Woo reflected on the value of schools and teachers. He spoke about the passion and dedication of educators who inspire and support their school communities, and who work hard to deliver quality education. Many educators continue to develop and grow their professional skills across the myriad roles and tasks they fulfil each day. The Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL), exists to recognise and support this development through the services, tools and resources they provide. Central to this is defining teacher quality at different career stages through the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers. AITSL has developed a series of videos known as Illustrations of Practice, which target standards and link to the Australian Curriculum where relevant. Take a look at some examples here. Visit the AITSL website. Upcoming EventsMark these dates in your calendar
