In recognition of World Malaria Day, April 25, the PATH Malaria Vaccine Initiative (MVI) is joining with others to call for sustaining the gains being made in fighting malaria, including in the research and development arena.

Breakfast Briefing: Future Directions in Malaria: Accelerating Progress (April 19, webcast available)
Leaders from PATH’s malaria programs and drug-development affiliate will highlight next steps in their efforts to combat malaria, in a panel moderated by Dr. Carter Diggs of the US Agency for International Development. Speakers and topics include:

  • MVI’s Dr. David Kaslow on malaria vaccine development
  • Malaria Control and Evaluation Partnership in Africa’s Dr. Rick Steketee on building the evidence base for malaria control
  • OneWorld Health’s Hugh Chang on scaling up production of semi-synthetic artemisinin

Showcase: Advancements in US Science and Technology in Malaria (April 25)
On Capitol Hill, meet several of MVI’s US-based partners engaged in cutting-edge malaria vaccine research. Dr. Rhoel Dinglasan from Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute; Dr. Mary Galinski from Emory University; Dr. Malcolm Gardner from Seattle BioMed, as well as MVI’s Dr. David Kaslow will be present. MVI at the European Parliament in Brussels:

EU Parliament Working Lunch & Reception (April 25)
In partnership with the Roll Back Malaria Partnership, International Federation of the Red Cross, Norwegian Red Cross, Red Cross EU Office, Malaria Consortium, and Malaria No More UK, MVI is co-hosting a working lunch and reception on malaria. There will be an impressive line-up of speakers, including Dr. Tsiri Agbenyega, Chair of the RTS,S Clinical Trials Partnership Committee, who will speak on the importance of malaria R&D.
