QiLing Research Hospital (Simplified Chinese version)

The QiLing Research Hospital (QiLing), located in Beijing, China, headed by Dr. Tien Tzu, CEO, is in a partnership with the China Research Network (CRN). This partnership was formed in an effort to mutually benefit both parties in terms of becoming a leader in health-care quality standards and creating more effective health-care techniques. Due to the intertwined nature of this relationship, the acquisition of human capital for specific positions within the hospital requires CRN to provide the candidates. Dr. Tien Tzu is increasingly concerned that CRN's hiring conditions are hindering QiLing's potential - specifically referencing the latest batch of candidates CRN has provided to fill a key spot in the neurology department. She is aware that the right people are the key to maintaining QiLing's growth and loyalty and has analyzed how the candidate selection process, overall compensation, and job retention efforts affect the quality of the human capital pool. She is entertaining thoughts about overhauling the process for the benefit of QiLing, and is unsure how CRN will respond to any proposals she might make. The objectives of this case are to: understand that a crop of bad résumés might be a symptom of how the résumés are collected; understand when and how secondment and external/open competition systems are used, with special emphasis on their advantages and disadvantages; become aware that once systems are analysed and evaluated, they can then be deconstructed in order to create new systems that will better serve the company’s needs.

Dialogue in the Dark, Hong Kong: A Role Model for Social Enterprises in the Making

Dialogue in the Dark Hong Kong Limited (DiD HK) is a social enterprise founded in August 2008 with a vision of providing "insight for everyone". In line with the worldwide DiD, the core values of DiD HK are diversity, quality and sustainability. As a social enterprise, DiD HK aims to achieve both social and financial objectives. Although it has to raise the awareness of the public toward blind or visually impaired (VI) people and promote employment opportunities for them, DiD HK aims to achieve financial success, financial sustainability and dividend payout to investors. In the first two years of operation, DiD HK made inroads toward a breakeven in 2010 through its unique ownership and business models. Geared toward expanding to other parts of Asia, DiD HK was not without its problems. It is imperative for management to review its strategies, and find ways to sustain its expansion and financial performance. If DiD HK can overcome these challenges, it may serve as a role model social enterprise not just in Hong Kong, but also in other parts of the world. The case is suitable for both business and non-business senior undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as for executives in the private and public sectors, NGOs and other social enterprises. It is useful for those who wish to learn more about social entrepreneurship and the development model of social enterprises. It could also be used in courses on corporate social responsibility, business-plan writing and entrepreneurship.

Family Business Succession in Asia

The Wang Group was created by Alfred Wang in Hong Kong after fleeing China during the turbulence that marked the beginning of the communist regime. After successfully building up the diversified trading business and expanding to various other Asian countries, in 1995, the business was taken over by his second son, Charles Wang, a charismatic leader. Charles wished to create a more sustainable family business, tuned in to today's global trends, and run by non-family members. The objective of the case is to understand salient issues related to the transition of a family firm towards a professionally managed entity. The case can be used to discuss succession and leadership of family firms and change management.
