A gift from Leipzig: Smokin’ hot Bach, and a two-night trip

GermanyisWunderbar

So-called Räuchermännchen (smoke men or incense smokers), a typical Christmas decoration from the Ore Mountains in Saxony, are part and parcel of the festive season in Germany. In Leipzig, they even do them in the shape of form of Johann Sebastian Bach which should make a nice present for any music lover. To follow the traces of the ingenious Baroque composer who lived in Leipzig for 27 years, the city also offers a special package for two nights including entry to the Bach Museum and an opulent banqueting 5-course dinner in a historical restaurant. From just €129. Bit of a bigger treat than a smokin' composer but hey, Christmas only comes once a year.

A gift from Hanover: Invitation to the castle and gardens

GermanyisWunderbar

Knowing the English love of palaces and gardens, especially those with major historical interest, Lower Saxony is highlighting a new exhibition opening in 2013 to mark the reconstruction of Hanover’s Herrenhausen castle: ‘Palaces and gardens in Herrenhausen - from baroque to the modern day’.

The connection with England is of course that our Hanoverian royal family started with George I, who was born in Hanover back in 1660 and ruled both Britain and Saxony at the same time. And it was Allied aircraft which originally destroyed the castle, during World War II.
