Dear

Mental health has been in the press a lot of late. Prince Harry spoke up about it earlier in the year, encouraging people – especially young males – to confront it and not be ashamed to speak about this illness. Of course this is often easier said than done. We’re all aware of mental health issues at the workplace – no more so than in a restaurant’s kitchen. An article in yesterday’s OFM delved into this topic (see link below in the 'what we’re reading' section).

A lot of people in this industry thrive under stress and the buzz associated with running a restaurant but it’s clear that employers must be aware of that fine line between rewarding career ambition and simply allowing staff to work as many hours as possible.

Have a good week.

Adam

The Camberwell Arms

Long-time favourite south London pub The Camberwell Arms is consolidating its connections – the chef-director Michael Davies has hired Frank Boxer and the rest of the team behind Peckham hang-out Frank’s Café. But the pub – a multiple award-winner for its Sunday lunches – is going for evolution, not revolution. There’s now a new private dining room (just in time for Christmas) and in the new year an upstairs bar will mix drinks and tunes.

Mee Market

In a week’s time, Linda Lee of On the Bab and Koba will open her latest venture, something of a bridge between her existing street food-influenced and high-end restaurants. Mee Market, on Archer Street, will be a ‘table and market’, so you can both eat in and buy food and goods to take away. The elegant space will act as another showcase for design expert Lee’s beloved Korean cuisine – from poké bar to hot soups and stews and an 18-seater area downstairs in the lifestyle store area.

Antipodea

Next up in the Australian-themed march on London – after recent coffee and doughnut launches – comes a third Antipodea, the brasserie specialising in modern Aussie food. It’s owned by Jason Wells, who already has a mini-chain of Brew Café coffee shops in SW London and brasseries in Kew and Putney, who intends to further capitalise on the market for leisurely brunches in that well-heeled area. The new branch opens next month.

Grind

Travel might be about to be improved dramatically with the news that the Grind brand is using Crowdcube again, this time to extend its reach into Britain’s airports and rail stations. Grind, the brainchild of entrepreneur David Abrahamovitch, already serves both coffee and cocktails in nine sites across London … but usually at different times of the day and evening. Of course the curious timeless world of airports might suggest mixing things up. The new funding cycle is live now.

Jim's Cafe

Fresh from winning Maverick of the Year at the London Restaurant Festival awards, Brunswick House chef Andrew Clarke has a new venture. He’s working with drinks expert Tony Conigliaro and the Black Skulls London brand to revamp the famous old Jim’s Café in Hackney – it will keep the sixties diner look, plus a private dining room in the basement and a menu a lot more elegant than the name would suggest.

Tree news

Since CODE acknowledges the Christmas season when December arrives, it’s time to round up where to go for that festive feeling (or to hide from the shopping). This year, the Claridge’s tree has been designed by fashion legend Karl Lagerfeld and it’s a real belter; over at the London Edition hotel, illustrator and ceramicist John Booth has created a quirky, colourful display, while the Long Bar at the Sanderson has an alpine forest complete with falling snow.

Aiden Byrne

Big transfer news from Manchester – local star chef Aiden Byrne is leaving his position at Living Ventures to join D&D London. However he’s staying in the city, as he’ll be launching a large restaurant, bar and grill for the company in the No1 Spinningfields building. Called 20 Stories, there’s no surprise that there will be a rooftop terrace to capture those views, but the name also references the building’s past as a newspaper office too. Byrne is working on a menu of modern British dishes ahead of a February launch.

Sean Marsh

Good news for The Hour Glass pub on Brompton Road, which has announced that Sean Marsh has joined as head chef. The cosy pub which has been a local favourite for decades, will have a new menu for its upstairs dining room, stuffed with seasonal British dishes and a touch of inspiration from Marsh’s previous berths – Mugaritz and St John – expect pigs head terrine, dripping carrots and beetroot-pickled eggs.

The Dumbwaiter enjoyed his first Thanksgiving dinner in the US last Thursday. Back in London, he noted that Dustin Lance Black and Tom Daley tucked into an alternative Thanksgiving meal at Caravan Bankside.

Koya in Soho has always been a firm favourite of The Dumbwaiter’s and now there’s a second outpost in the City at the Bloomberg building it means more udon love for everyone. And The Dumbwaiter adores the fact that all the udon will be made on-site at the new Bloomberg restaurant space before being brought to Soho daily on a bicycle. Healthy and sustainable.
