Greetings from your Community BoardMessage from the ChairKia ora koutou, Highlights from our latest meetingOur Community Board met on Tuesday 15 September. Some highlights of our meeting included hearing from local residents as part of our Public Forum and approving funding for a number of community projects as part of our Strengthening Communities and Discretionary Response Funds. Eels slip into students' data netCommunity groups and students from schools along the Opawaho/Heathcote River have been out after dark this week, learning how to conduct tuna/eel surveys. Work on Nor’West Arc cycleway steps up a gearConstruction is well underway at nine different sites along the route. Work will be finished soon at the intersection of Rose Street and Palmside Street where new drainage, kerb, footpath and a crossing island to access Centennial Park is complete. A lot of work is happening at Annex Road with 230 metres of kerb, drainage and light poles already in place. Repair work planned for PioneerEssential maintenance work is planned for the Pioneer Recreation and Sports Centre this summer. The main pool, wave pool, spa and sauna will close for approximately six months from Saturday 14 November so the pool plant, roof and air conditioning system can be repaired and allow for earthquake strengthening of the pool hall to be carried out. The fitness centre and group fitness classes will remain open as usual. World Rivers and Fish Migration Day 2020Christchurch World Rivers Day has combined forces with World Fish Migration Day to become bigger and better. Join us at our central hub for displays, workshops, activities, music, a small planting along the river banks, the photo competition prize-giving, a free BBQ and lots more! World Rivers Day is an annual international event, and one of the Ōpāwaho Heathcote River Network (OHRN) planned annual events to celebrate the river, the groups along the river and to bring people together. Plan to reclaim streets for playSome residential Christchurch streets will be temporarily closed to traffic and turned into play areas for children in a series of pop-up events funded by the Government. Christchurch City Council has received a grant of just over $39,000 for the Play Streets initiative from Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency, in round two of the Innovating Streets for People Pilot Fund. Council trial on track to identify graffiti offendersGraffiti across Christchurch will be “mapped and tracked” using innovative technology to help identify offenders and cut costs to ratepayers. The Smart Christchurch Graffiti Recognition trial , which will begin shortly, will track graffiti activity using data from the public and contractors to help curb building damage and identify repeat offenders to Police. Get your kids swimsmart before summerChristchurch parents are being encouraged to make sure their children have the skills to stay safe in the water this summer by enrolling them now for Swimsmart lessons. Treasure hunt fun te reo teaching toolA treasure hunt for kids that combines te reo Māori with learning about Ōtautahi Christchurch’s artworks, nature and heritage launched this week. Coinciding with Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week), this free Taonga Hunt will run through the school holidays until Sunday 11 October.
