Editor's note

Returning to her Friday column, Michelle Grattan today lays out the bleak scene ahead for Malcolm Turnbull, who faces headwinds from an unpredictable Trump presidency, a dyspeptic electorate, and his own party.

And with little political capital left to help chart his own course against surging populism, Grattan says the times simply do not suit Turnbull.

Also returning this week is our Friday Essay, with Michelle Smith considering depictions of transgender people in film and literature. As Western culture faces the challenge of understanding the first generation of openly transgender children, Smith says the stories being told about transgender characters are changing.
