Chlorination ceases at two more pump stations

A pump station that supplies water.

Update: Tuesday 31 July 2018

We’ve stopped chlorine treatment at Burnside and Farrington pump stations in the North West supply zone.

The move comes as a result of the minor remedial works we’ve done on the above ground well heads to enable them to be signed off as secure. We’ve also isolated the remaining below ground well heads, which means we can stop chlorination.

About 80,000 people are in the North West zone and turning off treatment at these two pump stations means 37 per cent of the zone is getting untreated water, about 30,000 people.

We are working through a similar process to stop chlorination at the following pump stations:

  • Thompsons and Grampian in the North West zone
  • Hills and Lake Terrace in the Central zone
  • Woolston in Ferrymead.

We can only stop using the below ground wells at times of low (winter) water demand. If demand goes up and we need to use the below ground well heads, the water from the pump station will need to be treated.

Reducing the chlorine dose

A water supply pump station with chlorination equipment.

The chlorine dose has been reduced at 10 pump stations across the city.

The pump stations are:

  • Auburn, Avonside, Burnside, Crosbie and Grampian in the North West supply zone
  • Kerrs and Hills in the Central supply zone
  • St Johns in the Central/Ferrymead supply zone
  • Picton in the Riccarton supply zone
  • Tanner in the Rocky Point supply zone.

These are all pump stations where we have at least two minutes’ contact time before the first consumer on the network and the reduction has been agreed with the Drinking Water Assessor.

Additional sampling points have been installed at a distance from the pump station that water would travel in two minutes to ensure we are maintaining effective disinfection.

We’ve put more detail about the work programme online

A screen grab of the Water Supply web page.

We’ve added some new layers to our chlorination map and created a new section on our website for water supply projects.

The map now shows you where the well heads are, and which ones are included in the first stage of works. You can find it here.

On the new Water Supply Projects section you’ll find information about new wells and pump stations we’re constructing, well head improvements work, and alternative disinfection methods.

Work progresses on new wells in city

Two new wells and a pump station are being built on Ben Rarere Avenue in Aranui.

Drilling of the wells is being done by Canterbury company McMillan Drilling and is expected to be finished in December 2018.

Construction of the pump station is expected to begin during 2019 and be finished in the middle of 2020. When completed, the new pump station will deliver up to 100 litres a second into the network.
