Hi there!

A quick 'hello' from Hood River, Oregon. I've taken a two-day breather here before jumping on the bus later today heading back to Portland. Really excited for XOXO!

The launch of my latest issue went really well. If you have bought a copy or subscribed, thank you so very much for enabling me to continue to do this. The kind words have been truly overwhelming and it made all the hard work once again totally worth it! Shipping (from my Berlin-based warehouse) starts tomorrow, so the first copies should arrive in Germany and then the rest of Europe later this week.

Something to read: Some of you may know my critical stance on the oversimplified 'love what you do' philosophy. There have been quite a few blog posts on the topic lately, but nothing provides a better reality check than this wonderfully honest piece by pianist James Rhodes. Make sure you add it to your reading list.

This Weekʼs Line-Up

A sun-powered phone charger + light
01

Little Sun Charge is a new solar-powered phone charger taking Kickstarter by storm (300% funded after a few days). The Danish designers behind this have an interesting back story too: their first invention was Little Sun (no charger) that brought light to hundreds of thousands of people in the developing world. They are also a B Corporation. It instantly makes me want to support their work...

A no-nonsense newsreader
02

To quote the great copy on the website: "FeedHop is a fast, themeable, web-based newsreader. It helps you cut through the noise of the internet and find content you care about, faster." It looks fantastic and I'll definitely give it a spin once I find the time.

A desk that 'envelops' you
03

This Herman Miller desk is "named for the flexible work surface that slides to envelop you as you work". It's an interesting approach to achieve better work ergonomics that I haven't seen before. If you don't like standing desks this could be an alternative worth checking out. It comes with the Herman Miller price tag too.

An app to collect & organise your media
04

Raindrop is one of a range of apps that allow you to save and organise all kinds of digital media (links, articles, photos, videos, etc.) in one place and then access them through various devices. For TMD I use a (strangely similarly named) app called Dropmark to do this. Both seem to do their job well and both offer strong, slightly different pro features.

A tiny camera to record your life
05

Narrative (the newest model is shipping soon) is a tiny camera you can clip onto your cloths or carry around your neck that records whatever you experience. Built-in wifi and bluetooth connectivity makes data transfer easy. At this size you can't expect GoPro-level image quality, but I don't think they are trying to compete in that same category. It's an interesting way to capture an event and tell a story, for sure.

An app for introductions at events
06

There have been a lot attempts at replacing the traditional business card with a digital counterpart – without any real success. Wildcard focuses on being able to meet and introduce onself to interesting people at events. The idea is great and the app looks neat too. The challenge with this – and all apps in this space – is that you need a critical mass to make it useful for even a few. I would like to see this succeed though. (Not to be confused with the other Wildcard app.)

Intelligence, Kant reminds, is not so much a result of genius, rather it is a consequence of a determination to use it.
