Community funding storiesCommunity Boards offer grants to assist local groups to undertake small community projects. Here are some stories about local groups who have received funding from our Waipuna/Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board. Olympics legacy to live on at Denton ParkThe legacy of the 1974 Commonwealth Games and Stanley Denton will live on at Denton Park, thanks to a welcome grant from the Waipuna/Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board. The Greater Hornby Residents Association will install two commemorations at Hornby’s Denton Park, including a Commonwealth Games mural and a memorial of Stanley Denton, who gifted the land for the park. Community Board ‘invests’ in Hornby youthA new youth hub will open in Hornby, offering a safe place for young people to meet and connect while also providing access to youth workers. A $24,000 grant from the Waipuna/Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board to the Community Development Network Trust will help transform the former Plunket building in Wycola Park into a hangout space for after-school use. Trust Manager and Hornby community youth worker James Harris says the new space offers an opportunity for young people to come together, talk to youth workers , play games and join in programme activities. “The hangout is a safe place for young people to come after school to play a game of pool or foosball, share a scoop of chips with friends, play some basketball and chat with a youth worker,” Mr Harris says. “It also will give us a base for meetings on our Teen Adventure Camps, and a renewed presence at the corner of Wycola Park.” Community Board Chairperson Mike Mora says it is vital to invest in Hornby’s young community. “A youth hub provides invaluable connections and opportunities to build a stronger and united growing community that benefits everyone,” he says. Youth workers will be available at least three days a week during the school term and the hangout programme will operate for at least two days each week. The new hub is aiming to open towards the end of 2021. To find out more about the hangout programme, visit the Community Development Network Trust website or Newsline. Perfect time to clean your drainsWith autumn here and wind and rain on the way, drains can quickly become blocked with leaves. You can help avoid flooding around your property and street by removing any leaves that are clogging drains. Did you know that all the stormwater from your house (roof and driveway) goes into your street gutter and then down the drain and into the nearest river? At this time of year, leaves can be a big problem by putting lots of nutrients into the stream and rivers – feeding bad bacteria and making it hard for plants, fish and insects to live in the waterway as it deteriorates the oxygen available. To stop leaves getting into our streams and rivers, you can rake the leaves on your lawn, driveway and roadside, then put them in the green bin. No more recycling confusion!Standing at your bin wondering what one your takeaway coffee goes into? Our bin app takes the guesswork out! The app’s got a huge list of items you can search to see what bin they belong in. Great if you’re not completely sure about where an item belongs! Hornby centre construction updateThere's not much to see yet, but here's a glimpse behind the fences of how work is going on the Kyle Park site for the new Hornby centre. HEB Construction is hard at work preparing the site for construction. They've finished most of the excavation and have started bringing in gravel to fill in the earth, and work is well underway on the temporary path at the west end of the site. Because COVID-19 has created a worldwide shortage in the steel used for construction, we've already ordered the steel for the piles that will support the building, to help us get in nice and early. The contract for the construction is now out for tender. It's open for four weeks and we'll have a contractor confirmed around the middle of July. Watch this space. We expect to celebrate the opening of this facility late next year. Read our latest project newsletter for more information. More new wetlands taking shapeNew wetlands are taking shape in the upper catchment of the Ōpāwaho/Heathcote River as work continues on reducing the flood risk in the area.
