North West cross-party support for standard packs as consultation ends today

North West MPs, along with young people from across the region, have been showing their support for the introduction of standardised tobacco packaging through a series of photo calls. The events have been really positive and highlight the high level of political support, backed by the majority of adults who want to see the introduction of standardised tobacco packaging to protect children. Did your MP take part in a photo call? Find out by clicking here.

The consultation on the draft regulations closes today (August 7) and we are now calling on the Prime Minister to ensure Parliament is given the time and opportunity to make the change in law for standard packs before the next General Election. To find out more about the importance of standardised packaging click here and read Andrea's latest blog post.

NW smokers to save £83m if plain packs have same results as Australia

PHE figures estimate an £83m decrease in tobacco sales in the NW if standardised packaging has a similar affect that followed in the year after Australia brought in standard tobacco packaging. Over 90% of money spent on tobacco leaves the local economy in tax or tobacco industry profit, so less smoking means more money would be kept within communities. Read more here.

Editor's note

Hi and welcome to your August eNews.

We have been busy working with supportive NW MPs and passionate young people to highlight support for standardised tobacco packaging through a series of photo calls. It has been great to work with young people across the NW looking to protect themselves and other peers from the harms of smoking.

With PHE and Australia releasing more positive figures that support standard packs, there is now an even larger body of compelling evidence highlighting both the health and financial benefits for our communities. We hope to see more MPs showing support in the coming months.

We were also delighted to see the draft regulations for smokefree cars carrying children released. The consultation takes us one step closer to protecting all children from the harms of smoking in the confines of a car. We are currently writing a response. Please contact us if you would like further details.
