Newly added to the MASC/MAHS Michigan Student Leadership website is a running list of student events and opportunities for member schools! Designate one student leader as your “MASC/MAHS Liaison” and keep up to date with upcoming events and important information!

Welcome Back List

Start of School: Get the ball rolling and prepare your students for a yearlong experience. Make sure to address the following items as school kicks off:

  • New to advising? Check out our Adviser 101 handbook for documents, roles and explanations to the role of an activity adviser (view 101 handbook here)
  • Meet with your executive officers
  • Define goals, responsibilities and projects for the first month of the year
  • Host your first group’s meeting (Back-to-school agenda here)
  • Welcome” letter to parents
  • Great way to introduce your program and encourage involvement (example here)
  • Student group Handbook
  • Great documentation assignment to begin with your executive board. Build and lead a program, not just a club. (view here)
  • Schedule a meeting with your administration to cover immediate needs and your yearlong program vision.
  • Design a student welcome package for new staff members! Help new staff feel welcomed and part of the team. Post pictures, fun facts and info on all new staff
  • Create a welcome back hype video! Students take centerstage in this fun, informative tour style hype video. 

First Weeks of School: Remember to have your leaders out and vocal to new students entering your building for the first time. Acting as a tour guide and friendly face can go along way to building your culture from the start! Use these quick tips to kick off the year right!

  • Have Club forms and flyers visible around the school
  • Assign student to the main entrance, counseling office and high traffic areas to help students find their lockers/classrooms
  • Notes for staff! Have students provide candy or a short note to welcome staff back!
  • Make Directional signs for new students labeling hallways and main areas
  • Have student announcements and acknowledgements ready to go
  • Assign students to high-five and congratulate students getting back on the bus at the end of the day
  • Social Media: Quotes, updates and school news can be pushed throughout the day and after school. Parents will love seeing updates on the welcoming environment you are helping create
  • Lunch Time: Check with Admin to see if your leaders can be spread across all lunches the first week of school to sit with and check-in with younger students
  • Decorate: Welcome banners, graduation pledges, mission statement and school motto. All can help shape the environment you strive to create.

Leadership Training Institutes – Registration is live! 

Dates and locations are open for registration! This year, all sessions are based on our Leadership Curricular Standards, with sessions hitting specific learning expectations designed to engage and inspire your student leaders! Curricular Focus Areas include: Communication, Citizenship, Group Process, Leadership Styles and Organization Skills.

Adviser 101 Workshop

To help facilitate and assist schools in creating a lasting positive impact in their building, MASC/MAHS Michigan Student Leadership is providing a free "Advising 101" training to all new member advisers across the state. This year’s Adviser 101 will be held on October 21st from 12:00-3:00 in Lansing. The exact room information will be sent to all interested advisers a week before the event. Space is limited, reserve your spot today!
