Rupert Murdoch's 21st Century Fox formally launched its bid to acquire 100% of Sky. The family failed to take control of the broadcaster six years ago as a result of the phone-hacking scandal, but are now confident that this deal will go through. Culture secretary Karen Bradley has ten days to refer the bid to the regulator. Martin Moore sees the threat to media plurality and urges her to do so, while Steven Barnett looks at the how much more clout the already powerful mogul would have.

The Amazon jungle isn’t as wild as you think. Large numbers of its trees show signs of hundreds if not thousands of years of domestication. Chris O Hunt reports on new research into how archaeologists can use these trees to uncover the history of human cultures, and contribute to preserving the way of life of people there today.

Peeing in a swimming pool seems to be quite common – even Olympic athletes have fessed up to relieving themselves in the water. But chemicals in human urine combine with chlorine to create trichloramine, which has been linked to asthma and other respiratory issues. And as Simon Cotton and Laura Finney explain, it's also behind that smell we associate with a clean pool.
