Bancolombia: Talent, Culture and Value Creation Management in Mergers

The case presents a review of the main facts related to the merger process experienced by three companies, Bancolombia, Conavi and Corfinsura, in the Colombian financial market during 2005 and 2006. Considering the fact that the success rate of merger processes is not above 30 per cent, the sustained financial results achieved by Bancolombia from the very beginning of the integration process are robust indicators that invite exploration into what was done and how it was done. Conceived as an approach to carry out a deep analysis of the complexities associated with a large-scale organizational change effort, the case is suitable for inclusion in a course on organizational behavior, leadership and strategic human resource management. It may also contribute to courses and classes with different learning objectives. The purpose is to have students identify how organizational culture’s deliberate intervention can provide an opportunity for a coordinated and coherent execution of the firm’s strategy. The case enables students to identify how culture management can support the strategic objectives defined by the company by putting into operation actions directed to their implementation and execution.

Ransom on the High Seas: The Case of Piracy in Somalia

The setting of this case is off the coast of the failed state of Somalia, where incidents of piracy have increased dramatically over the past few years. In this case a group of 14 pirates have hijacked a cargo ship full of machinery, but have yet to make any demands. They hold the multinational crew of 20 (whose captain and two officers are American), the ship, and the cargo hostage. The Chief Operating Officer of an international shipping company must choose among alternative strategies to get the crew, cargo and ship, back safely with as little cost as possible. The main objective of this exercise is to teach students about the responsibility of the firm to its employees and how to deal with organized crime. A secondary objective is to provide some understanding of the current ongoing situation in the failed state of Somalia and how to negotiate in high-risk situations. The case can be used in corporate responsibility, international business or international management courses.

BP and the Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill

On the night of April 20, 2010, a series of explosions rocked the Deepwater Horizon oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico. Millions of barrels of oil spilled into the Gulf of Mexico in the weeks that followed. The federal government relied on BP to manage the accident’s aftermath, in part because government officials lacked the expertise required to stop the spill. As the firm failed repeatedly to stop the spill, the public became angry. This industrial disaster became the largest offshore oil spill in U.S. history. Drawing on the Presidential Commission’s investigation, as well as numerous journalistic accounts, the case provides a detailed description of the events leading up to this catastrophic accident. Students examine the key decisions that BP and its partners made as they drilled this well. This case provides students an opportunity to examine how and why catastrophic failures occur. It also highlights several factors that drive enhanced risk-taking in organizational decision-making. In addition, the case enables students to learn about the characteristics of an effective versus ineffective safety culture. The case can be used in courses in organizational behavior, decision-making, ethics and leadership. Instructors will find it appropriate at all levels, ranging from undergraduate courses to executive education.
