December marks the two year anniversary of standardised packaging in Australia, and it has been two and half years since the UK Government began consulting on the measure. To mark the anniversary the Smokefree Action Coalition has put together a new briefing document and a postcard which illustrates the packs.
We have continued to engage with NW MPs on this issue over recent months as part of a briefing campaign involving young constituents and PR work which we will continue. There is now very little time left to ensure Parliament gets the chance to vote on the regulations before the next General Election.
If your organisation supports standardised packaging, you can send a letter on behalf of your organisation asking local MPs to urge the Government to bring regulations before Parliament at the earliest opportunity. Supportive letters from key local figures such as Directors of Public Health will all make a difference. If you have any questions about how you can support this please get in touch.

The consultation report on smokefree cars with children is expected to be published before Christmas recess (December 18), with the regulations published either at the same time or shortly after. This is great news and if the regulations are agreed before May's general election the law is expected to come into force in October 2015. Read more here.

Hi and welcome to your December eNews.
The clock is ticking to ensure that standardised packaging is voted on before the general election. With time running out we have been working hard to ensure that NW MPs have all the information they need and have been working with supportive cross-party MPs to highlight why legislation is needed. If your organisation is supportive, it would be great if you could take action locally to highlight the strong support across our region.
We are also hoping that legislation for smokefree cars will be adopted soon which would protect young people across the North West from the dangers of secondhand smoke, which results in thousands of hospital admissions every year. I look forward to updating you on progress in the next edition.
I have also included information about our next anti-tobacco industry youth event which is taking place February 18. Please share the invitation with your local youth groups and contacts to help us make the event a success.
