With Melbourne temperatures later this week predicted to reach into the high 30s, players and spectators at the Australian Open will feel the heat. The challenge of creating ‘climate proof’ sports stadiums has never been more urgent.
As Paul Govind writes, new stadiums overseas are now incorporating climate mitigation features including retractable roofs, adjacent green spaces to avoid heat islands, solar panelled exteriors and even charging stations for electric vehicles. But progress has been slow in Australia.
