Some highlights of our meeting included hearing from local residents as part of our Public Forum and Deputations by Appointment. Culture Galore - Waste DiversionIn addition to the food and performances, Culture Galore again participated in the Council-led Compostable Food Packaging at Events Initiative, achieving a brilliant 77 per cent diversion from landfill. This is a fantastic achievement from the participating community groups and food vendors and the sustainability partner Total Waste. Styx Living Laboratory Site VisitOn Monday 22 March 2021 the Board undertook a very interesting site visit to Styx Reserve, hosted by the Styx Living Laboratory Trust. The Board heard about the work the Trust is undertaking in terms of water quality monitoring, restoring and protecting natural habitats and ecosystems, predator control, and the reintroduction of native species. Walk a mile with a refugee during The Walking FestivalThe Christchurch Walking Festival 2021 provides a chance for Cantabrians to explore amazing walks in Christchurch, Selwyn and Waimakariri. The festival will be held from 17 April until 2 May. There's heaps of different events, including the mile walk with a refugee event, designed o help build connections and support the integration of refugees in Christchurch across Aotearoa. Time called on cheque paymentsThe Council will not be accepting cheque payments from 30 April 2021 because the three major New Zealand banks are phasing out cheques in May and June of this year. Connecting over what's in commonA new initiative - InCommon - has been created in response to the Christchurch mosque attack by Cantabrians who want to ensure the incredible community spirit, togetherness and companionship that poured out after the tragic event doesn’t end. Watch the best battle it out this weekend!Bunnings National Touch Tournament kicks off at Ngā Puna Wai Sports Hub this Thursday 15 April. The tournament runs from Thursday to Sunday and will see top teams from around New Zealand compete for the title. This free festival of touch offers something for everyone.
