Strong Voices: Royal Armouries in conversation with young person, Jack Halsall

"It was really interesting to be in the museum after it was closed and the tunnels were all dark..."

An exhibition of stunning images and accompanying soundscape was created by 11 young people from Portsmouth Autism Support Network.

The young people explored the collections at the museum and then worked with film artists Butterfly Fx and with independent creative artist Ben Claybon to make the images and record the soundtrack. On 13th February, the young people helped organise a Private View for their families and invited guests. As part of the evening guests were shown light painting techniques themselves.

Guests described the workshop as "fun", "exciting" and "empowering" and also said it "made [them] realise the complexity of the final exhibition pieces".

The pieces created by guests on the night can be viewed here

CASE STUDY // Extending Digital Practice: 'The Artist Not in Residence'

The Artist Not in Residence involved young people and teachers in schools making virtual connections to professional artists and arts & cultural organisations in their studio, gallery or museum, in order to enhance their learning.

The focus of this action-based research was to explore how digital-based learning (using Skype) could enable cultural organisations and artists to deliver curriculum needs and build relevant virtual
resources for schools. It also aimed to explore whether schools benefited from increased access to high quality arts, creative and cultural professionals and whether students’ motivation, skills and understanding were increased in the process.
