From the President

Greetings all,

I’m hoping that a few of you have made the most of the Member Get  A Member Promotion and have scored a few extra months on your membership. With all the press on cost of living increases and carbon taxes getting a 25% extension on your membership has to be a welcome bonus! It’s still open until the end of July if you wish to make the most of it .

I’m also hoping that there’s a few of you keen to apply for next year’s board! You will have received the notice of the AGM on the 18th of August and we do have quite a few roles available. If you have been thinking about how to accelerate your career through a leadership role this might be the time to step forward.

There’s been some interesting conversations of late – President Elect Kate O Donnell and I met with CEO of PRIA Jon Bisset to discuss next years World PR Forum to be held in Melbourne in November. IABC is a member of the Global Alliance (as is PRIA) and the World Forum is being hosted by PRIA. As we are a member of the Global Alliance it is expected that we shall have a role in the conference.

I’m also being interviewed this week for an article on the Best Practices in Internal Communication for Knowledge, an online magazine for the University of NSW. It’s a great opportunity to talk up the benefits of the ABC accreditation program and the Gold Quill Awards

We’re also doing some exciting work exploring a new member benefit program for you as well. It involves matching new members or early career members with experience members or those more senior in the profession to catch up for a coffee and chat. We’d like to keep it informal – but if you have any thoughts about such a program and what you would like to get out of it, do shout out (or leave us a comment).

Finally, a big congratulations to former IABC Victoria President Adrian Cropley for his official transition to IABC Executive Chair for 2011-2012.  Adrian is now officially grand poo bah of IABC and very hard to track down! That being said, it is a wonderful coup for us locally, as our voice will well and truly “Be Heard”.

Till next,

Jennifer

Member-get-a-member promotion

Word of mouth has been the best marketing tool available to IABC. A sizeable majority of our members join because a respected colleague recommended IABC membership. To that end, we're bringing back the popular Member-Get-A-Member promotion in July. The basic premise is that members who recruit new professional members will get three free months of membership for each new member they bring in, up to a full year at no charge (complete rules below). The promotion will begin on 1 July 2011 and run through the last day of July, Pacific time.

Applauding people at the Department of Transport

By Liane Briner

The challenge of recognising colleagues’ efforts in a timely and easy way was the catalyst for Pause for Applause at the Department of Transport (DOT).

How does Pause for Applause work?

Pause for Applause lets anyone in the organisation thank a colleague for their help, or a job well done, by emailing 30 words or less to the internal communications team. As a general rule, nominations are posted within 24 hours on the DOT intranet homepage.

The internal communications team discovered it was important to notify the nominee before publishing, as there was one instance where someone was not comfortable being nominated.

What does Pause for Applause look like?

Pause for Applause is essentially a tile on the DOT intranet page that states the name of the person who has been nominated by a colleague, and has the words ‘click to find out why’ written in a smaller font size underneath. This links to a page on the intranet that provides the full 30 word nomination, and lists other Pause for Applause nominations.

On the days when there isn’t a nomination, a generic Pause for Applause tile appears.

Has it been successful?

Pause for Applause was launched a year ago. Since then, there have been just over 200 nominations –averaging at about two-three submissions a week. There have been quiet times – especially in January and February – when six nominations were received for both months, however there have also been strong months, with 36 as the record.

To ensure the number of nominations remain stable, and come from various divisions within the organisation, the internal communications team and network, People Matters Group, and DOT Leadership team have helped raise awareness. It has been pleasing to see the direct correlation between promotion activities and the number of nominations.

There are approximately 1500 DOT Victorian Public Service employees.
