This weekend in New York, San Francisco, Toronto and other cities, thousands will march in gay pride parades. But these joyful rainbow-hued events are not without controversy, writes Laurie Marhoefer of the University of Washington. Many participants will meet the usual counter demonstrations – but conflict also comes from within the queer community. And the argument about the right way to celebrate and protest dates back before the Stonewall Inn riots that inspired the modern pride movement to the gender-bending nightclubs of post World War I Berlin.

Where do major scientific advances come from? Many of us think about the individual brilliance of Einstein, but he’s an exception and not the norm.
