Got Suga on the web

DEADLY radio plays Got Suga are now available online.

Users will be able to download the stories featuring Gary, a Murri man, recently diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.

Gary, portrayed by Lafe Charlton, is trying to keep on top of his condition but encounters challenges along the way.

He is supported by his sharp-as-a-tack wife Evie, played by Roxanne McDonald.  There are are a host of other supportive and not-so-supportive characters including Wayne (Len McDonald) who tries to persaude Gary to have a few beers at a football match.

Anthony Newcastle, a former 98.9FM presenter, came up with the idea for the Got Suga plays.  He provides the voice for a character called Malcolm and shares narrating duties with Roxanne.  Anthony also facilitates theatre workshops for Got Suga (see below).

Four new plays have been produced and avaliable for download here. Radio plays from previous years are also available to listen to.

Got Suga, a common expression used by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with type 2 diabetes, was developed with Diabetes Queensland, Brisbane Indigenous Media Association and Natjul Indigenous Performing Arts.

Diabetes Queensland also delivers Got Suga workshops about prevention and managment of the disease using role-playing and storytelling.  For more information contact 1300 136 588.
