Public Education Foundation Executive Director, David Hetherington A teacher who brought robotics to a remote school is among a distinguished group of students, teachers and parents were celebrated last week at the 2017 Minister's and Secretary's Awards for Excellence. The Minister for Education, Rob Stokes, and the Department of Education Secretary, Mark Scott, presented awards to 35 students, 37 staff and eight parents from across NSW. Department Secretary Mark Scott said it was an honour to celebrate the achievements and outstanding work in NSW public schools. "The students, staff and schools we recognise today are just the tip of the iceberg in terms of the excellence we see every day in NSW public schools," Mr Scott said. "I congratulate these winners and acknowledge that their commitment to excellence and improvement to student learning outcomes is a vision shared across NSW public education." Education minister Rob Stokes said the awards showcased the tremendous contribution that students, teachers, principals, parents and school communities made to public education in NSW. "Schools are just empty buildings without the students, teachers, and parents that make them great," he said. Just Launched: New Scholarships for TeachersOur new Teachers Scholarships have been created to highlight the important role played by early career teachers in transforming the lives of students. The scholarships provide professional development opportunities to help these teachers excel. The First State Super Teachers Scholarship is designed specifically to support public teacher who teach Early State One and Stage One. First State Super knows that early career teachers give young children the foundation blocks for future learning – they are responsible for helping our children feel future ready. The Public Education Foundation’s Teachers Health Early Career Scholarship supports public school teachers in the first three years of their career. As a not-for-profit organisation, Teachers Health gives back to the education community through sponsorships, scholarships and programs to care for the health and wellbeing of those in the education community.
STEM ScholarshipThe Trades & Technology STEM Opportunity Scholarship is a prestigious scholarship, which aims to encourage students in the senior years of secondary school with an interest in pursuing a career in trades or STEM. Erin Sevince from Westfield Sports High is a tech enthusiast and one of this year's recipients of the STEM Scholarship. Malala Yousafzai ScholarshipMalala Yousafzai Scholarship supports hard-working students in the middle years of secondary school who have a strong belief in the power of education to change lives. The scholarship targets students whose circumstances are such that the scholarship can make a significant contribution to helping them to successfully complete their schooling. Tertiary Transition ScholarshipsThe Public Education Foundation offers three main scholarships for students transitioning to tertiary studies in 2018. Jade and Samuel are both recipients of the Walter and Eliza Hall Opportunity Scholarship. Jade is excelling in her Bachelor of Security Studies course at Macquarie University and the talented Samuel is at the Australian Film and Television School. The Susan & Isaac Wakil Foundation offers students who have ambitions in a field that is in high demand. Joseph Demasi is now at studying Patisserie at Ryde TAFE. Students with a refugee background can also apply for the Friends of Zainab Tertiary Scholarship. The very bright and engaging Mursal Rahimi is now studying law at the University of NSW. 2018 Scholarships Now OpenFor the 2018 scholarship round, the Public Education Foundation will award scholarships to over 300 public school students.
