Research Update

Good afternoon,

Apologies, for the borken link earlier. Now linked below is the Import Export Report for December 2018.

Here are a few key findings:

  • Imported beer volume decreased by 3.3% during December 2018.
  • Beer imports finish the full year up 3.6% - slightly stronger than 2017 and well-ahead of domestic beer volume, which finished the year down 2.1%.  This represents a continuing shift in consumer demand, primarily driven by demographic changes.
  • Mexican imports finished 2018 up 8.6% - roughly double their growth rate from 2017.
  • Belgium and German imports were jointly down by 10.3% during 2018, after having been up slightly in 2017.
  • Dutch imports finished the year down 6.8%.  They were up 1.7% during 2017.
  • Non-alcohol beer imports grew by 6.8%, after declining in 2017.
  • Cider imports declined for the third consecutive year.
  • Exported beer volume grew slightly during 2018, after having grown double digits in 2017.
  • Exports to Mexico continued to grow at mid-single digit rates during 2018.
  • Beer exports to Asian markets grew by nearly half in 2018 and now total more than U.S. beer exports to Europe.
  • Cider exports grew at mid-single digit rates, as they had in 2017.
  • Non-alcohol beer exports declined by about 25% but the volume of exported NA beer remains well-above that of just a few years ago due to explosive triple digit growth in 2017.
