Is retail a profession?

Is retail a profession?

Retailing is an important economic activity as it provides the interface between the production and distribution of goods and services and their consumption by the Australian community. As well as providing this important service, retail is a significant activity in its own right. According to an Australian Government Productively issue paper (2011) , in 2009-10, retail accounted for 4.3 per cent of GDP (ABS 2011a) and in February 2010, 11.0 per cent of Australian employees worked in retail (ABS 2011b).

Despite these impressive statistics, according to Deakin University Senior Research Fellow - Retail Industry Steve Ogden-Barnes, retail as a profession does not receive the same amount of kudos associated with engineering, medicine or accounting. Can retail be classed as a profession? Deakin University Senior Lecturer, Program Director of the Graduate Certificate of Retail Management Dr Stella Minahan and retail specialist Steve Ogden-Barnes believe the answer is ‘yes’.

Do you need a coach or a mentor?

Do you need a coach or a mentor?

What is the difference between coaching and mentoring? DeakinPrime has the answer!

Coaching is the partnership between the coach, the individual and the organisation.

Mentoring is about providing support to ensure that individuals are able to achieve their highest potential for themselves and for their organisation.

Both coaching and mentoring have a significant impact on the translation of learning from classroom to the workplace—in fact, both of these approaches are embedded in the 70:20:10 principle.

Both coaching and mentoring add value to people’s workplace performance and productivity, but they are often confused. Our understanding and approach is to clearly distinguish the differences between these approaches and, more importantly, know when to apply each within a workplace situation.

Metropolitan Fire Brigade and DeakinPrime

The MFB and DeakinPrime work in partnership to deliver the Station Officer Leadership program. The program incorporates various aspects of leadership and management, technical training in emergency services as well as community service-related training.

Customer service is one module within the Station Officer program. In this module, Station Officers have been required to think about how service quality to the Melbourne community is important – activities in this area involve community education afternoons at local schools or working with different multicultural groups to provide information on fire prevention. A practical customer service action learning project that Station Officers have embarked on over the course of three days has been constructing an aviary for injured animals as part of the Babbajin sanctuary in the Yarra Valley.

Find out more about the project from the perspective of the Station Officers, the customer, MFB management and DeakinPrime facilitator»
