- 7 Creative Ways To Use Your Visual Summary
Hi there! I hope you've been managing to bunker down and weather the novel coronavirus storm. Many businesses have been hit hard and have been forced to think creatively about how they interact with each other and with customers in order to survive. This was front of mind for me when I decided to launch The Sketchcast. The SketchcastThe Sketchcast is a podcast and video show where I chat to interesting people to find out how they are using sketching and visuals to do amazing things. For the first episode, I roped in an experienced facilitator, designer, strategist, and fellow sketcher Ben Crothers (author of Presto Sketching). He was the first person that came to mind when I asked myself "who knows the most about facilitating groups online?"
Some of the visual notes that I captured from Ben and my chat about remote facilitation
As you can see above we had a ton of fun recording this interview, and discuss, among other things: - how you can use colour to help people to express themselves better
- how you can help people get up to speed on digital tools when they’ve never used them before, and
- Ben shares the specific tools that he’s using to do this kind of work
There are visual notes throughout to help you digest the content, and a handful of blooper clips at the end. The show notes for this episode include a link to every tool/website mentioned, and a full transcript for those hard of hearing (or who just prefer reading content over watching video). We're really quite proud of this first episode, and hope you find it entertaining and useful.
With the government gradually easing lockdown restrictions in a cautious attempt to revive the economy, we're forging ahead with blind optimism—we believe that using sketching and visuals to transform businesses is more important now than ever. For that reason, we've chosen to add a new member, Ashleigh, to the Sketch Group team.
Ashleigh joins the team with a unique background of science and sales, and we're excited about the potential she has to help grow the business and help our clients communicate their message. It's only been a few weeks, but Ashleigh is already brimming with ideas and enthusiasm. We're excited about the potential she has to make an impact here at Sketch Group. Welcome, Ashleigh!

Sustain: The Australian Food Network
We recently helped Sustain: The Australian Food Network to tell their story as a sketch video. Sustain helps people evolve their food systems for the better, and the work they do is quite complex and involves multiple layers, multiple stakeholders, and a diverse skill set. Distilling so much into a short video was always going to be quite the challenge ... but we do love a challenge! Take a look at the finished product: how did we do?
A short video describing the EASE framework for helping families with parents who have mental illness
Our producer and copywriter, Kerstin, did a wonderful job of distilling a complex ecosystem into a succinct story, and our illustrator Wendy brought it to life with vibrant imagery. Here's what legendary gardener, landscape architect, and TV personality Costa Georgiadis said about the video: Wow! What a visual and fact-filled feast you have compiled. Congrats to Sustain: The Australian Food Network and Sketch Group for an engaging visual narrative.
We love being exposed to fascinating topics as part of the work we do, and this video for Sustain was no exception. Take a look and get your head around what is arguably one of the most important issues of our time.
7 Creative Ways to Use Your Visual Summary
Recently we asked someone who had inquired about remote scribing "How do you plan on using your visual summary?" as part of the initial sales discussion. Her response was "What do you suggest?" This prompted us to document a bunch of ideas for how to make the most of the image that a graphic recorder creates after your event is over, based on all of the different ways that clients have used our imagery in the past. The end result? An article called 7 Creative Ways to Use your Visual Summary once your Event is Over, which we've published on our blog. These ideas are relevant whether your event is captured on a large sheet of paper in the room, or remotely over videoconferencing. Have a read through and see if it sparks any ideas for you.
That's all for this issue. Stay safe, and don't hesitate to reach out if you have a video, event, story that you think we might be a good fit to help you bring to life.
