This update is packed with information and events to help you make the most of the term More study spaceThere are loads of new temporary and permanent study spaces available to support you during exams. More than 300 new spaces have been created around the Forum, including the Sanctuary with 180 study spaces, Lasok Law Library in the Forum, Career Zone and Exploration Lab 2. There are also around 90 spaces in the Peter Chalk seminar rooms, and the La Touche café study spaces are open 24 hours during the exam revision period. Replacement study spaces in Amory (C417 and C501) have also been created to replace those lost due to construction work on the new Amory hub. Check out the video about available study spaces on Streatham campus. May ExamsExams start on Tuesday 8 May and run till the end of the month. Remember that mobile phones and other electronic devices (including smart watches, exercise and fitness trackers) should not be brought into your exams, or you could face a severe penalty. Allegations against members of the Bracton Law SocietyYou will be aware that at the end of last term allegations were made concerning the behaviour of a number of students associated with the Bracton Law Society. We immediately began an investigation into these allegations and this has now concluded. We will be writing later this week to update all students and staff on the investigation and on the work we are undertaking to ensure we become a more inclusive community. National Industrial ActionWork is still continuing to minimise the impact of the strikes held during February and March, on your learning outcomes. Remember there is further information, including Frequently Asked Questions available on the website. We are going to hold a number of breakfast events for UG, PG and final year students, where you’ll be able to come along to chat to staff and ask questions. They’ll be taking place towards the end of May – keep an eye out for full details from your College in the next couple of weeks. Improving your education experienceWe’re launching a project to enhance teaching systems at Exeter and your user experience. We’ve held student focus groups to get feedback on core systems including ELE, eBart and Accelerate and now want to expand this opportunity to the wider student community to ensure we have a good understanding of everyone using the systems across all disciplines, year groups and campuses. It’s a chance to get involved with leading subjects including climate change, food sustainability, gender inequality, mental health, global security and ocean plastics. If working in interdisciplinary groups with other students to design innovative solutions to real world challenges sounds exciting, then Grand Challenges is for you. During the week you will hear from external speakers and top academics and get a chance to further develop your transferable skills such as team work, presentation skills and project planning. Book your place at Social Mobility ConferenceWe’re launching our new Centre for Social Mobility with a conference on June 12 in the Forum and it’s open to students with research interests in the subject. The conference will raise awareness and build working relationships across the University to support a whole institution approach to social mobility. Book your place at the conference here. Blackwell's Second Hand Buy Back Service Blackwell’s bookshop offers a second hand buy back service, buying books which will be used on modules next year. Available seven days a week all summer, this four lane, 25 metre outdoor swimming pool is set in a large grass and patio area, heated to a constant 29ºc and staffed by qualified lifeguards making it great for relaxing during those warm summer days. Building Updates Building work continues for developing a major new space at Peter Chalk, opening in late spring, which will see a range of new facilities for students and staff. This will include the Info at Peter Chalk information point, an additional 105 new study spaces, a new café and self-service catering facilities which will include microwaves and hot/cold water. Last term we arranged for UG civil engineering and structural engineering students to visit Peter Chalk to spend time with the contractors and view a live construction site. Online Incident Report FormThe University’s incident report form is now available to complete online. We want to prevent incidents and accidents on campus, and it's easier to do this when we know about any near misses and any incidents or accidents that happen.
