Few countries can have exceeded Sierra Leone’s share of misfortune over the last three decades, including civil war and the world’s largest Ebola outbreak. Last week a mudslide devastated Regent, on the outskirts of the country’s capital, Freetown, killing more than 400 people. David Winter examines the country’s response to trauma.

During the recent presidential elections Kenyans once again experienced the heavy hand of government security forces. This was particularly evident against protestors from poor neighbourhoods dominated by one ethnic group. Christina Kenny and John Ahere examine Kenya’s post-poll conflict and conclude that it’s never just about the elections.

Temperatures in Nigeria are expected to rise, so much so that there are predictions that some cities will be too hot to live in. But there’s a solution. Olumuyiwa Adegun and Tobi Eniolu Morakinyo believe that urban greening will help.
