Hello EnableMe member

As we prepare to celebrate the festive season, we want to say a special thank you for making EnableMe the warm and supportive community it is.

Our community has grown to more than 6400 members. We've seen friendships built and people reaching out to help others by sharing their words of advice. There have been many inspirational, helpful and supportive conversations throughout the year.

It's also a great time for you to reflect of what you have achieved this year. Self-reflection is an important part of recovery. It helps to make sense of things, challenge thoughts, recognise changes and track progress. Thank you Sue for sharing your reflection of this year in: 2018 - In reflection.

Toni writes about how her relationship with Christmas has changed since her stroke. She shares how she balances her limitations and sadness with the magic of the season.

Alex has shared a very moving blog about gaining insight and undertanding of his recovery. After his stroke, doctors did not hold much hope for him, but Alex has proved them wrong and is finding a path towards his new normal.

Today we opened nominations for the 2019 Stroke Awards. These awards recognise stroke survivors and their carers, health professionals, and volunteers who have shown outstanding commitment to improving the state of stroke in our country.

Finally, as reflection turns to looking towards the year ahead we share insights about goal setting from Dr. Natasha Lannin and from Sue Bowden.

All this and more!

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year - By Toni

Ho! Ho! Ho! and Merry Christmas!

So here it is my most favourite time of the year and yet yesterday I was in tears and I’m sitting here still feeling flat and sad. Christmas has always been such a magical time, full of wonder and anticipation, and whilst those emotions still make an appearance, there is a sense of grieving for what once was.

Understanding my recovery - By Alex

When people say I woke from a coma it sounds like waking from a restful afternoon nap, but the truth is being woken from the coma was more frightening than the stroke itself.

I was at a stage of being in and out of consciousness and had an emergency doctor on top of me punching me in the sternum followed by the removal of my breathing tube. I had glimpses of my family but I still had no idea what was happening to me.

Seeking the unsung heroes of stroke – Stroke Awards open today!

Nominations are now open for the 2019 Stroke Awards. These awards recognise stroke survivors and their carers, health professionals, and volunteers who have shown outstanding commitment to improving the state of stroke in our country.

Do you know any stroke survivors, carers, health professionals or volunteers who you think should be recognised for their efforts? Then show your appreciation by nominating them for the 2019 stroke awards.
