Researcher Spotlight

A research team will be featured in the next edition of the research bulletin.

Research Successes

Jessica Reid from Healthy Mothers, Babies & Children theme/Women’s & Children’s Health Research Institute has been awarded her Doctor of Philosophy. Thesis title: The effect of higher protein human milk fortifier on growth in preterm infants.

One of our own researchers from SAHMRI, Karen Hawke from the Healthy Mother’s Babies & Children team, was recently selected to take part in an exciting new documentary called Homeward Bound. Homeward Bound was created to acknowledge the crucial need for more strong female leadership in Science, and provides a vehicle for women to collaborate globally, to exercise their significant intellect and creativity together rather than as individuals.

Karen was one of 42 women selected from a group of 170 female scientists around the world. They will embark on a 30 day Antarctic voyage in January 2017, while onboard they will learn leadership and strategic skills from world experts, and discuss the most important scientific and environmental issues in our world today and how we tackle them. They will then be led on an Antarctic expedition by renowned mountaineer, Greg Mortimer, the first Australian to successfully climb Mount Everest.

A feature length documentary will be made about the voyage, plus a documentary series that follows each of the women over 7 years to record the contributions they make to Science and Leadership. We wish Karen the very best with this exciting & rewarding opportunity.

Wardliparingga Aboriginal Research Unit is proud to announce the development of a Wellbeing Framework which will assist primary healthcare services to support the quality of life of, as well as to improve the quality of care for, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples living with chronic disease. Under the guidance of a National Reference Group, a team of researchers, including thirteen Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander healthcare professionals from across Australia, came together to undertake this important work. Over 70 community members and healthcare practitioners who provide care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander were interviewed as part of the study.

The Wellbeing Framework identifies values, elements and principles fundamental to the provision of care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Key to the Wellbeing Framework are practical and measurable applications that suggest ways in which these could be applied. Primary healthcare services, in consultation with the communities they serve, will be able to use this Wellbeing Framework to shape their own models of care which specifically address the needs of their local communities.

Professor Deb White has been invited to be a member of the NHMRC Women in Health Science Working Committee.

Research Infrastructure Update

The Cancer Theme would like to remind researchers of the availability of two items of equipment housed on level 5 north : an Immunobead Separation System (autoMACS® Pro Separator, Miltenyi Biotech) and a Bead Array System (Magpix, Abacus ALS). The autoMACS Pro is bookable on PPMS – this instrument is a high-speed magnetic cell sorter employing MACS® Technology, and is designed for cell isolation in a fully automated, walk-away fashion. The MAGPIX is a compact fluorescent-based detection system, capable of simultaneously measuring up to 50 targets of interest in a single microtiter well. Based on Luminex’s proven xMAP® Technology, the MAGPIX system uses color-coded magnetic microspheres as the substrate on which assays are performed.  The Magpix is currently bookable via a google calendar. Please contact Verity Saunders for more details on either piece of equipment.
