Netzhammer discusses the role of the university in the health of its community

One of Chancellor Mel Netzhammer’s greatest passions in higher education is exploring how universities’ situate themselves in their communities. He strongly believes universities must be of their communities and not just located in them. On April 17, Chancellor Netzhammer gave a keynote address on this topic to the Portland Chapter of Financial Executives International. Read the full text (PDF).

Four award winners to be recognized at Commencement

WSU Vancouver has announced its 2014 awards for research, service to the university, student achievement and teaching excellence. The four recipients will be honored with a Chancellor’s Medallion at Commencement at 1 p.m. May 10 at the Sleep Country Amphitheater in Ridgefield.
 
Chancellor’s Award for Research Excellence—Thomas M. Tripp, professor of management in the College of Business and expert on workplace conflict

Chancellor’s Award for Service to WSU Vancouver—Twyla Barnes, superintendent and chief executive officer of Educational Service District 112, and 20-year member of the WSU Vancouver Campus Advisory Council

Chancellor’s Award for Student Achievement—Helena Lucia, 2014 graduate in computer science

Students’ Award for Teaching Excellence—Dene Grigar, associate professor and director of the Creative Media and Digital Culture program

ASWSUV President Shavey Winters to speak at Commencement

For the first time since 1992, a graduating student will deliver the commencement address. Shavenor “Shavey” Winters is the 2013/14 ASWSUV president and will graduate with a bachelor’s degree in public affairs. She has devoted her college career to service and involvement. She was a peer mentor in the Office of Student Diversity, director of the Student Activities Board and an intern on the Diversity Council. Through her college experiences, she says, she has learned to push herself to do more than she thought she could.
