Wild Flag, Erasers, Some Other Band @ Bakery Wednesday 8 March

It’s 6pm and I’m sitting on a lawn in Bayswater. the industrial section. There’s a dog playing in the water streaming out from a hose – it’s not a rottweiler though – and the sound of V8s is wafting over me, mixed in with the very special music I’m listening to. Everything’s industrial. Everything here serves a purpose. It’s not about aesthetics, but to me it’s pretty beautiful.

But I guess I gotta talk about a show, right?… So on Wednesday I was at the Bakery. Can I tell you it from my own perspective, as usual? Well, the thing is I went to the show not feeling that excited about the headline band, but happy to be playing with new friends.

tahlia palmer: steady eye

kony 2012 and the aftermath

I watched the Kony 2012 video the day it was released, and I immediately went to the website and bought the brown t-shirt in support. I was gutted by what I saw, impressed by how fucking well the film makers knew their target audience, and I believed I understood exactly what was going on. Here were some American guys who came across a Ugandan boy who was considering suicide so he didn’t have to deal with the daily threat of being kidnapped and forced to join an army, so they decided to dedicate their lives to helping him and every other person in his situation. After 9 years of working in and out of Uganda on things...

Bonobo @ Capital, Friday March 9

The bi-plane’s engine groaned and spluttered.

“What’s wrong?” roared Doc over the howling wind.

“I don’t know!” I bellowed over my shoulder. “But we’ve got trouble.” Black smoke began to spew forth, concealing the grinding propeller. The blue-grey sea heaved and raced towards us at alarming speed.

FRIDAY march 16

james teague

at mojos bar, fremantle

Friday, March 16,  James Teague  launches his debut album Lavender Prayers. Behind the iridescent veil of talent that is the Perth music scene, James Teague has been busy quietly carving his debut album. Along with his boast-worthy band, Teague ventured out last year, into the seclusion of Pemberton, to give birth to what is promised to be one of the most beautifully unique records of the year - ‘Lavender Prayers’. Brimming with brooding contemplation, yet frivolously whimsical, ‘Lavender Prayers’ showcases Teague’s lyrical poetry and shape-shifting voice, complete with mesmeric harmonies and a sonorous blend of instruments that keep every song as fresh as the first. If you find your fancy tickled or your ears tingling with anticipation, then find yourself at Mojos Bar, on, for the launch of this seductive new record! Special guests include: Hunting Huxley - The Flower Drums - Seven Weapons - $10 entry, or $25 with a copy of the album. Doors open at 8pm

SUNDAY march 18

seekae

at mojos bar, north fremantle

(EVE) Sunday, March 18, Seekae play Mojo Bar. After releasing the critically lauded +Dome, gaining international acclaim and selling out shows across Australia, Sydney electronic experimentalists Seekae return to Perth. Seekae brilliantly blur the lines between the organic and the artificial in a way few electronic artists can manage. Guitars and live drums mix with drum machines, samplers and synths and studio genius to create an intoxicating sound that is both glitchy and beat-filled, while still being undeniably human. Having carefully honed their live show with a solid international touring schedule, a Seekae gig is captivating and mesmerising, yet thoroughly danceable. Following on from previous Perth support slots for PVT, Broadcast and Mount Kimbie, Seekae’s last show at The Bakery was a sell-out. Don’t miss out on what is certain to be an astonishing performance. Supports from Usurper of Modern Medicine, James Ireland and DJ Jo Lettenmaier.

Presale tickets are $22+bf available here.

The LOFT: Bowie ++

at geisha bar, northbridge

From Space Oddity in ’69 to the androgyny of Ziggy Stardust and the plethora of music he/she put out in the 70′s with albums like Hunky Dory, Diamond Dogs, Young Americans to the slick sounds of the 80′s captured perfectly in Let’s Dance.

He was king of the music world and with his movie forays also became the Goblin King.

HEYTESBURG EP LAUNCH

at the rosemount hotel

At times abrasive and discordant yet often reflective and mysterious, HEYTESBURG deliver an atmospheric concoction of psych industrial rock that is quite simply; unique. And nowhere is this heard more clearly than on their sophomore EP 'PÝR'. Sub-bass synths, haunting keyboard samples and primal sequenced rhythms meld with distorted ring modded guitars and a thumping machine-like rhythm section, to create a style of grimy, reverberant industrial rock unlike any other.

Saturday 24th of March see's them launching the EP in the glorious confines of the Rosemount Hotel with a stellar support cast. One can expect a live show of epic proportions with some special guests so come down and join in the festivities! Entry is $12 or $15 with an EP from 8pm.

the little stevies

at little creatures loft, fremantle

Thursday, March 29, The Little Stevies will pack out Little Creatures Loft with a little help from local lass Lucy Peach. The Little Stevies are made up of sisters Sibylla and Beth, and their childhood friend Robin.  They descend from a long line of great Australian acts that includes the likes of Frente, The Waifs, and Paul Kelly, whose music retains a sense of fun while maintaining an emotional depth and maturity. With three North American tours, appearances at world-renowned folk festivals, countless national shows under their belt  plus the creation of their own record label “Love Your Records” in just the past two years,  it’s no wonder The Little Stevies have been labelled one of the hardest-working bands in Australia! Their unique blend of emotive and honest songwriting, combined with catchy pop melodies and beautiful three-part harmonies do what so many others strive to; they give their audience licence to really identify with them, and to feel that they're sharing something of themselves. I challenge you to not be glowing after seeing them play. Presales are available thru HERE for $16 & more on the door from 7:30 on the night!

The 39 Steps

at the harbour theatre, fremantle

THE 39 STEPS, adapted by Patrick Barlow from John Buchan’s 1915 novel and Alfred Hitchcock film of the same name, is HARBOUR THEATRE’S first production for 2012. Set in the 1930s, the play calls for the entire Hitchcock film to be performed nearly verbatim onstage - but with a limited cast.

The play follows the misadventures of Richard Hannay (CHRIS THOMAS) who accidentally meets up with foul play and international espionage, accused of a murder that pushes him to find the real killers and save the country. Along the way he has to deal with romantic entanglements, authorities trying to catch him and villains planning to destroy Great Britain.

Aided by JOANNA ZUKOWSKI, MICHAEL DORNAN, CHRISTOPHER KENWORTHY, SARAH COSSTICK and MELISSA KLIMISCH, who play every other character - iincluding heroes, villains, men, women, children and even the occasional inanimate object - the play challenges them with lightning-fast changes and the physical demands of mime and choreography required to play multiple characters.

This hilarious take on the original novel is directed by TREVOR DHU who previously directed and choreographed West Side Story at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre.

THE 39 STEPS plays at 8pm March 9, 10, 14, 16, 17, 21, 23 and 24 with 2pm matinees March 11 and 18. Tickets are $24.50, $22.50 concession and $19.50 student concession - book on 9484 1133 or HERE!
