South East Bridge News Update
March 2016

Welcome to the latest edition of the South East Bridge enews.

This month we have exciting news and updates from several of our programmes, including Horizon 20:20 in Hampshire, Open Space meetings in Berkshire, and an update on Cultural Education Partnership work in Reading. As well as this, we hear from Lorraine Cheshire, our School Liaison Manager (Hampshire, IOW, Portsmouth and Southampton) on this month's conference on integrating the arts into Special Educational Needs settings, and much, much more. We have been encouraged this month by the recognition of the vital role of arts and culture in society, as reflected in the latest Government Budget announcements, and by the recent publication of the Government’s Culture White Paper.

As always, our resources are available to download absolutely free of charge - simply register on the Artswork site for full access. If you tick the box to register as an ENYAN member as part of this, you will also be granted access to discounted rates on a selection of our upcoming personal and professional development courses.

Thanks for subscribing and sharing the journey with us, as we endeavour to increase arts and cultural opportunities for children and young people across the South East region.

Horizon 20:20 programme to engage hard-to-reach young people in Hampshire through arts and culture

Hampshire Cultural Trust (HCT) is to head up an exciting new programme that will see local young people explore different art forms through a series of workshops, including printing, pottery, drama, music and poetry.

The young people, deemed to be ‘at risk of social exclusion’, will have the chance to work with professional artists and enjoy cultural visits to locations including Milestones Museum (Basingstoke) and the Tate Modern (London).

“Artswork's co-investment in Horizon 2020 supported an innovative and ground-breaking pilot programme; one with the potential to make a meaningful difference. It provided fantastic opportunities for disengaged young people to build confidence, leadership and self-esteem through participating in great arts and culture. We look forward to sharing the learning from this over the next four years.”

Artswork has been working with the South East Local Enterprise Partnership’s Creative Industries group, to develop a programme that provides a link between cultural education and the development of pathways into the creative industries.

Recently launched at the House of Commons, Towards a National Prospectus for the Creative Economy in the South East sets out the ambition for the Partnership across Kent, Medway, East Sussex and Essex.

The group is working towards accessing the resources that can help to make the critical links between the work of our regional cultural education partnerships.

Government continues to recognise value of art and culture in latest Budget

"There is much to welcome in the Budget for arts and culture. The Government continues to see the value culture brings to our lives, to our society and to the wider economy. We are delighted the Chancellor has decided to extend creative sector tax reliefs to museums and galleries. The Arts Council, and the whole sector, put a strong case for this change. Theatre tax relief has already generated £25m, and this new relief could bring real benefits to museums and galleries."
