Barnard College Update - Thursday, Sept. 29, 2016

Dear Claremont resident:

Work continues this week on the foundation phase of the project which includes constructing the concrete footings, that part of the foundation that transfers the structural loads from the building to the Earth so the building doesn't settle over time. Once the footings are complete, we will begin pouring the foundation walls.

We have had a few inquiries asking why there isn’t a crosswalk at W. 120th Street and Claremont Ave., and why there are no lane lines along the street. The Department of Transportation repaved Claremont during late summer and have not yet repainted the crosswalks and lane lines. We have let them know of our concerns. Also, as we mentioned in our updates last spring, we asked the DOT during our site approval process for the new building to add a temporary crosswalk at W. 119th, but they did not approve our request. The DOT believes the crosswalks at W. 116th and W. 120th Streets are sufficient.

Construction Schedule

Our schedule will continue to be weekdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. We are also adding a few Saturdays to our schedule this fall including October 8, 15 and 22, but the work will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., based on feedback from the community. The work being done on Saturdays will not be as noisy as the work we did over the summer, will not involve drilling of any kind, and will be in line with the work that is taking place currently during the week. We can also confirm that there will not be any concrete truck deliveries during Saturday work and only intermittent deliveries, if any. The work happening during this time is in support of the foundation walls and mainly involves waterproofing efforts.
