Holiday Proposal Submission Schedule for OSP and BMRA

PI Eligibility for Externally Sponsored Awards Policy Change
The Principal Investigator Eligibility Policy underwent a comprehensive review this summer. After examination by Brown’s Vice President for Research and Senior Officers, a refreshed policy will become effective in 2020, More details here.

Terminated Workers Effort Certification Business Process Update
The improved process for certifying effort reports in Workday for terminated employees is in place. OSP has worked closely with Workday Operations to reconfigure workflow for greater efficiency, More details here.

Federal Agency Audit Focus
“No-cost” project extensions can provide additional time beyond the established project end date for programmatic activity. This is never allowed for the purpose of using unobligated balances. For agency specific guidance, see our chart here.

Smart Mobility Projects Advance
Brown faculty and students took the stage in San Francisco this month at the Hyundai Mobility Innovator’s Forum, which showcased their ideas and research on all kinds of transport to an audience of 650 experts in the field of smart mobility. Read more

Leading life sciences venture capital firms Canaan Partners and Domain Ventures visited Brown's Professor John Sedivy and IECV team members in October, based on his work for preventing and reversing age-associated inflammation. Read more

Cancer Medical Device Technology Gains
IECV is working with licensee Theromics Inc. to secure a $1.2 million seed equity investment from Launchpad Ventures, New England’s largest angel investment organization. Read more

HRPP Winter Break Submission Deadline
To allow enough time for review prior to winter break, HRPP will stop accepting human subjects research submissions Dec. 12 at 5pm. Reportable event reports will be accepted until 12 pm on Dec. 20. The submission freeze will be lifted January 2.

Revised Conflict of Interest Policies
On October 26, 2019, the Brown University Corporation approved revisions to the University’s Conflict of Interest and Commitment policy, as well as the Conflict of Interest in Research policy. See here for details.

NIH Federal Updates

Eligibility Window Extension Policy for Pathway to Independence Awards
Consistent with the NIH Extension Policy for Early Stage Investigator Status (ESI), effective immediately, NIH will approve an extension of one year for childbirth within the 4 year K99 eligibility window. Further details here.
