We are deeply moved by the media images of those affected by Guatemala's "Volcano of Fire" which erupted on Sunday, June 3. Wednesday's death toll has risen to at least 69, with expectation of more to be added to that count as rescue efforts continue. Crews are working feverishly, sifting through ash and debris -- often so hot, their efforts are slowed.
As events have continued to unfold, we have been in discussions with HFI Mexico Director, Zalathiel Rodriguez. Together, we are continuing to gather information from sources in the area and giving careful consideration to what our next steps should be. Zalathiel shared the following with us:
"As a response to the time of need that our brothers and sisters in Guatemala are going through, we have been in communication with businessmen, pastors and leaders in Guatemala to have a specific and actual assessment of what the situation is, and the needs generated by the eruption of the volcano. We are also talking to friends, pastors and leaders in Mexico who are concerned and willing to be part of a Christian response to help those in need."
