Date set for temporary chlorination

Christchurch water is safe to drink.

From 26 March, the Council will begin the temporary chlorination of the city's water supply.

You are receiving this email because, as an alcohol licence holder, you may use water in your business activities.

In December, the Canterbury Drinking Water Assessor advised the Council it no longer considered the city’s groundwater supply to be secure. This means there is a small risk that the water could become contaminated.

On January 25, on the advice of the Medical Officer of Health, the Council decided to temporarily treat the supply with chlorine while well head improvement work was completed. It is important to note that Christchurch water is safe to drink.

From a practical perspective it will take some time to implement treatment through all of Christchurch. We are starting with Brooklands and Kainga as well as the Heathcote Valley, moving across the city from there. There is a map on our website showing areas of the city where chlorine is being used and this will be updated as we progress.

Leaflets are being delivered to all letterboxes in the city and the Council website has more information about temporary chlorination.
