Prayer can make a big difference

It may seem like an obvious thing to say, but praying for our children really does make a difference! It can be difficult to cultivate a regular prayer life, but when talking to God becomes a natural part of the day it turns our attention to him and helps faith become more real in everyday life.

We know that God calls us to pray. He wants us to bring our requests to him, and we have many! He cares about and wants us to talk through the worries and concerns we have for our children or the parenting challenges that we are facing. And when we pray for our children we can also be praying for their future, that they will follow God and come to know him personally.

Bringing prayer into our family life can also be really helpful. Praying out loud so that our children understand we can pray anywhere and any time is great. When they get to see a natural conversation with God modelled, it becomes part of normal life for them.

“Pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.”

Ephesians 6:18

We can encourage our children to pray too, using fun, creative ideas or just short sweet thank yous. Whether it’s in their head or out loud doesn’t matter at all. Every reinforcement that praying is a normal part of life will help build their understanding that God is always there, always listens and wants to chat to us too.

It can be hard to start, but even if our kids don’t respond, don’t like praying or perhaps you find it difficult yourself, it’s worth trying short and simple rocket prayers that will really make a difference.

Have fun praying!

Ideas to try

1. Write down a specific prayer for your child that you can pray over them each day. It might be while they’re asleep and you pop in to kiss them goodnight, or just in your private reflections.

2. Try making prayer fun this week! Have a look at the ideas here on GodVenture and see what your children might engage with.

Thy Kingdom Come

This month, families across the world have been praying as part of the Thy Kingdom Come prayer initiative.

Check out some of their creative prayer techniques now!

Real story - When your child won't pray

In the latest blog, hear how even when it doesn’t seem like your children are engaging at all in prayer, something is sticking and a foundation is being laid.

Please send us your stories of inspiring faith at home – good and bad – we know it’s a rollercoaster! We’d love to include them in our emails and on the blog.
