Scientific understanding of the genetic causes of schizophrenia is steadily advancing – providing insight into what lies behind the alternate realities experienced by sufferers. This is of course promising, but scientists have no hope of truly understanding psychosis, or indeed any other mental illness, without understanding the nature of the subjective experiences of those who are ill.
Here, art can be a critical tool, as psychiatrist Elizabeth Tunbridge has learned from her artistic workshops with psychosis patients. Her experience has even prompted her to change her scientific practice.
