The Federal Government’s planned Data Availability and Transparency Bill, which would override the reams of existing laws and regulations around federal agencies sharing data, aims to maximise the value of citizen data across the public sector – and ‘accredited’ organisations including businesses. Despite planned safeguards, it’s sure to raise plenty of concerns. Sharing data is a logical move. It aids our interactions across agencies, cuts down on duplication (and cost) and pinpoints fraudsters cheating the system. But public wariness when it comes to data privacy is running high and governments, including in Australia, don’t necessarily have a stellar track record when it comes to handling sensitive personal data.
