Greetings from your Community BoardMessage from the ChairKia ora everyone, Highlights from our latest meetingOur Community Board met on Monday 22 June. Some highlights of our meeting included approving funding for a number of community groups, including the Little River Railway Station Trust, Lyttelton Boat Safety Association and Summer With Your Neighbours 2020-21. You can read more about and apply for community funding here. We also approved a proposal to install a no stopping restriction in Rue Croix, Akaroa,
to help improve local vehicle access, and a proposal to install a mobility parking space and no stopping restriction on Bayview Place, to support the Cass Bay Reserve Toilet Renewal Project. Making the right connections for Banks PeninsulaHigh-speed wireless broadband and 4G mobile phone coverage are on the horizon for Banks Peninsula as the 100th rural connection cell site went “live” in Gebbies Valley last week. Whaka-Ora plans native planting for SteadfastPlans to transform Banks Peninsula’s Steadfast site in Whakaraupō/Lyttelton Harbour into a native haven are a step closer, thanks to an agreement between the Whaka-Ora Healthy Harbour group, the Cass Bay community and Christchurch City Council. Next month, around 1.5 hectares of land along the banks of the Steadfast Stream in Cass Bay will be planted with around 3,000 seedlings from locally sourced native trees, and shrubs as part of a community project. Work starting on Western Valley Road footpathChristchurch City Council contractors are undertaking the construction of a new footpath along Western Valley Road from the Fire station to SH75 include; installation of a new footpath construction, signage and line marking. This work will start in late June and run until the middle of July 2020. Banks Peninsula Bridge MaintenanceYou might see our contractors out and about over the next few months, carrying out maintenance works on seven bridge sties across Banks Peninsula. The works involve the concrete underpinning of scouring bridge abutments and culvert footings. Roads will be open to at least single lane traffic for the duration of the work however there may be short periods when vehicle access to properties is restricted. Cyclists urged to take care in winter weatherThere's a few things you can do to make sure you and your bike are prepared for riding this winter season. Visibility is especially important during these short daylight hours so wear bright coloured high visibility clothing. Look after your bike, ride slower in wet conditions, stay warm and enjoy your ride! Extra month for dog registrationChristchurch dog owners will have an extra month to pay their dog registration fees this year. Residents with responsible dog owner status normally have to pay their discounted dog registration fees by the end of June but the Christchurch City Council has extended the payment deadline until 31 July. Canterbury Stories site plates up 1900s photo collectionImages of the early 1900s taken from a collection of fragile photographic glass plates are now in focus on the Christchurch City Libraries’ digital heritage site, Canterbury Stories. More than 700 images of the city and Banks Peninsula from the 1000-strong collection are online, including this 1940's image of a farmer and children alongside a bullock team used for moving farm equipment
on Banks Peninsula. It is the first time that the images are accessible to the public. Upgrade for Diamond Harbour LibraryDiamond Harbour Library will be closed on Thursday 25 and Friday 26 June for improvements, included an updated fit-out of the reception area and an upgrade of the data and electrical wiring. Items can be returned to any library in our network, with the nearest being Lyttelton Library. Diamond Harbour Library will reopen as normal on Saturday 17 June at 10am. Water charge would only impact high usersOnly households that use substantially more water than the average would face an extra charge for water if Christchurch City Council moves forward with a proposal to introduce a new targeted water rate. Matariki celebrations on the riseGet ready for Matariki to take a starring role in mid-winter family events around Christchurch. Matariki is the Māori name for the cluster of stars also known as the Pleiades. It disappears for about 28 days during mid-winter and when it reappears on the horizon – this year from 13 to 16 July - the Māori New Year begins.
