Enroll in our New Study at NWACT DR. STEINHOFF HAS A HULL LOTTA LOVE Living in Northwest Arkansas these past several months has been a great experience. I have felt very welcomed into the Hull Dermatology family. Dr. Hull has created a practice full of hard-working, caring people who strive to do what is best for the patients. I love being part of such a strong organization! My husband and I have also had so much fun watching our 21-month old son, Camden, grow and develop a fun-loving personality. Camden loves playing at the Amazeum and exploring Crystal Bridges. He also loves the water! Now that we are just a short drive from both Table Rock and Beaver Lake, we have had the opportunity to do some stand up paddling and boating (with vast amounts of sunscreen of course). We feel so fortunate to have moved closer to our family. We are enjoying spending more time with my parents, as they are retired and live in Bentonville for half of the year. We are all excited to explore more of the outdoors, including the Slaughter Pen Trail and hiking opportunities, as the weather gets nicer! Thank You for Coming to Our Open House! Hull Aesthetics held our Spring Open House last month and it was a roaring success! We want to thank all of you who came to see us and/or ordered online. Your loyalty is inspiring and we are so happy that you have chosen us as your Aesthetics provider. The day was full of demos with Susie and Alex presenting the Juvederm family of fillers while Gail took over the Conference Room with a series of body contouring presentations. Planning is already underway for our Fall event which will be held on Thursday, November 7th. You can look forward to more savings, more demos, and more great food! We will see you there! Choosing the Right Sunscreen By: Millie Roberson, RN At a recent health fair we attended, we had a visitor ask about how to choose the perfect sunscreen. With all the choices on the market, it's a great question that needed an answer. When choosing a sunscreen, look for one with an SPF of 30 or more containing zinc oxide. Keep in mind that the SPF number in your sunscreen only indicates the level of protection from UVB rays. Zinc Oxide blocks the widest spectrum of UVA and UVB rays. Did you know that about 95% of the UV rays from the sun are UVA rays? UVA rays penetrate deeply into the skin, damaging collagen and cells, and causing wrinkling, sun spots, and loss of elasticity. UVA rays can also penetrate glass at home, at work, and in your car. They are not affected by weather or altitude and are present all day, every day of the year. On the other hand, UVB rays mostly affect the outer layer of the skin which is why they cause sunburns and tanning. These rays vary with time and seasons and are stronger in the summer. While most windshields are treated to protect against UVB, your cars side windows are not. Have you ever been on a long trip in the car and come out with one sunburned arm? You have UVB rays to thank for that. As for my personal favorite sunscreen, it's SkinMedica's Mineral Defense Tinted. I like the mineral base instead of chemical blockers that can irritate my skin. Another thing to use for sun protection is antioxidants. They benefit the skin by helping combat free-radicals associated with UV and IR. They also help the skin fight against ground level ozone pollution. SkinCeuticals Phloretin CF helps decrease the appearance of discoloration and helps brighten the skin. SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic helps improve the appearance of fine lines and helps skin appear firmer. The Importance of Getting Your Skin Checked By: Debbie Pierceall, Development Director Here at Hull, we take skin cancer very seriously. We host free screenings, participate in community screening events, and attend numerous health fairs where we speak about the importance of getting your skin checked. Skin cancer is the most common of all the human cancers. According to The Skin Cancer Foundation, one in five people will get skin cancer by the age of 70. Even more alarming is that more people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year in the US than all other cancers combined. The good news, no, scratch that...the GREAT news is that skin cancer is generally curable if caught early enough. This is our motivation every time you hear one of our staff members reminding you to get your skin checked annually. It's easy and it could save your life! But, what if it happens? You come to see us and you get the news that you have skin cancer. Our expert team is going to take care of you, but what do the different diagnosis mean? Let's take a look at some facts. Cancer starts when cells in the body begin to grow out of control. In our skin, there are three main types of cells: squamous, basal, and melanocytes. Due to this, most skin cancers fall into three different types: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Let's take a look at each one. We will start with the most common which is basal cell carcinoma. Basal cells grow in the deepest part of the epidermis. Cancer caused by these cells is the most common because it usually develops on sun-exposed areas like the head or neck and can take on many different looks. Some basal cell carcinomas appear as raised pearly or pink bumps while others present as a sore that never seems to heal. If you are diagnosed with this form of cancer, some treatments we may choose are to freeze the tumor off, prescribe a medicated cream, or bring you in for Mohs surgery. Another type of skin cell is a squamous cell. These are flat cells on the outer layer of the skin that are constantly shed as new cells form. About two out of ten skin cancers are squamous cell and they can develop anywhere on the body. They can appear as a rough, scaly patch of skin, a flat sore with a scaly crust, or even in scars and chronic skin sores. Squamous cell cancers are not usually life threatening, but an untreated carcinoma can grow and spread to other parts of your body. Treatment can include cryosurgery, Mohs, or radiation therapy. Lastly, there is melanoma and we have all heard of that type. It forms from melanocytes, which make pigment in our skin. Melanocytes can also form moles, which is why we urge people to always check their moles for changes. Melanoma is less common than the other two forms of cancer, but is more likely to grow and spread if untreated. If can appear as a mole that starts to grow, itch or bleed, brown or black streaks under the nails, or a sore that refuses to heal. Treatments can include surgical excision, radiation, chemo, or immunotherapy. While this is just a very brief overview, we urge you to visit our website and read more in-depth about skin cancer. But most importantly, please have your skin checked annually. It's easy and can save your life. We offer free skin cancer spot checks during the year and have a staff of board-certified physicians here to help. Introducing the Exilis Ultra: Skin Tightening at its Best! Being new to the Northwest Arkansas area, I have spent my first six months slowly learning and experiencing all this region has to offer. I moved to Bentonville, along with my wife and dog, in September 2018. Our relocation was a little hectic as the movers were unable to find a driver to drive our belongings from Florida to Arkansas for six weeks, which left us without any kitchen or cooking tools. The silver lining was we were able to try A LOT of the wonderful restaurants in the area. Some of our favorites are Preacher’s Son, Blu Seafood Market, The Farmer’s Table Café for brunch, and SnackLab for quick and healthy food. After four years in Florida we were so excited to experience the four seasons! NWA delivered in this area for sure. We loved the beautiful fall and the colorful leaves, and even had the chance to visit a pumpkin patch. As there were a few very cold weeks, it was fun to see snow for the first time in years. Now that the weather has been warming up, we have started to explore many of the trails in the area. We even had a tick scare after hiking in Devil’s Den, which we know is a very common occurrence in Arkansas. We also love living so close to the Greenway. Our favorite Saturday/Sunday morning activity is to grab a coffee at Onyx and take our dog on a walk on the Greenway. We have not tried mountain biking yet, but we do love to run and bike on the paved trails! About a month ago, we were able to make our first day trip to Eureka Spring. We had so much fun checking out this cute town and enjoyed the beautiful drive to and from through the mountains. My favorite thing about moving to Arkansas has been my experience with my new position at Hull Dermatology. Having worked with numerous medical staff through my 8 years of training, I can say confidently the staff at Hull Dermatology is second to none I have worked with. Their dedication to patients and overall love of what they do is incredible. It has also been a pleasure getting to know my patients who live nearby including towns such as Eureka Springs and Siloam Springs. I have been filled with gratitude at the warmth and kindness that has been shown to me. It’s a wonderful feeling to have trained in medical school and residency for years to be in a situation where I can positively impact the health of my local community. To have received the gratitude that I have is not necessary, but has been wonderful and appreciated nonetheless. Even though we are new to the area, everyone my wife and I have met have made us feel like part of the local community. We are excited for what the future has in store for us in NWA! Missed Appointment Policy At Hull Dermatology & Aesthetics, we are dedicated to our patient care and service. We try to contact all of our patients at least 8 hours before their scheduled appointment to remind them of the date and time. In the event that you are unable to keep a scheduled appointment, we request that you inform us by telephone at least 8 hours in advance. This allows us time to contact patients on our waiting list and offer the time slot to them. Our providers’ time is valuable as we always have an extensive waiting list of both new and established patients. Patients who do not notify us at least 8 hours before their scheduled appointment time will be considered a “no show” and will be assessed a $50 fee per 30 minutes scheduled. Thank You! We at Hull Dermatology & Aesthetics are thankful for all of our patients. To our existing patients, I say thank you. For our new patients that are just joining our family, I welcome each of you. My staff and I are dedicated to providing outstanding medical and cosmetic dermatology for the Northwest Arkansas area and beyond. Thank you for choosing Hull. Sincerely, Cheryl A. Hull, M.D. |
