CPC Names Nan Shan Senior Center’s Dining Hall in Honor of Maria PoonOn July 7th, CPC held an unveiling ceremony to name the dining hall of the Nan Shan Senior Center in recognition of community member Maria Poon. Her family named the Maria Poon Memorial Hall in her memory.The Maria Poon Memorial Hall, located in the lower level of the CPC Queens Community Center in Flushing, is a communal space for older adults to enjoy meals, conversations, and activities with friends and family.The unveiling ceremony was attended by Maria Poon's family and friends, former CPC Board Member William Tam, and Councilwoman Sandra Ung.EDUCATIONWe provide high-quality learning opportunities for all ages—from Pre-K and after-school enrichment to adult English language classes—because education is lifelong.
Summer Rising BeginsFrom July to August, CPC is offering Summer Rising programs for students in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens. This year, we are serving a total of 1,030 children across 4 sites (PS 130, PS 2, PS 153, and PS 20) with enrichment programming to strengthen their academic, social, and emotional skills.
Lois C. Lee Early Childhood Center Celebrates July 4th with Painting and ReadingThroughout the week of July 4th, CPC Lois C. Lee Early Childhood Center in Queens celebrated the July 4th holiday with a read-aloud of the book, "Apple Pie 4th of July". The team had a fun discussion with the children about the differences and similarities between Asian and American cultures. In addition, our 3K and 4K students painted fireworks using a fork as a brush.
Chrystie Street SACCC Organizes a Family Trip to an Amusement ParkOn July 1st, CPC Chrystie Street School-Age Child Care Center arranged a family trip for young participants and their families to the Land of Make Believe, an amusement and water park in New Jersey. The trip was sponsored by MassMutual, and attended by 49 families, including a total of 145 parents and other family members.
Early Childhood Learning & Wellness Services Team RetreatFrom June 21st to 22th, CPC's Early Childhood Learning & Wellness staff who work on the Family Child Care Network (FCCN) and Child Care Resource & Referral (CCR&R) participated in a team-building retreat on Long Island to identify program priorities for the next year. FAMILY SUPPORTWe make it easier for individuals and families to access personalized social resources because support is fundamental at every age.
CPC Brooklyn Senior Services Members Visit Brooklyn Grange On July 18th, CPC Brooklyn Senior Services members visited the Brooklyn Grange Rooftop Farm to learn more about urban farming and to share their experiences in gardening and growing crops.
Nan Shan Senior Center Provides Free Eye Exams and Glasses On July 13th, Nan Shan Senior Center and Helen Keller International partnered to provide free vision screenings and prescribed eyeglasses to more than 60 seniors in the Flushing community.
Open Door Senior Center Organizes Dental Health Seminar On July 7th, CPC Open Door Senior Center partnered with Charles B. Wang Community Health Center to organize a dental health seminar for about 20 seniors. The seminar stressed the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene. For example, seniors should visit a dentist at least once a year. Fresh Produce Distribution at P.S. 94 On June 14th, CPC partnered with P.S. 94 The Henry Longfellow School to distribute fresh produce to the community. About 200 shares of produce were distributed. CPC is the Community School provider at P.S. 94, serving students, families, and community members. CPC Hosts The Queer Feast to Celebrate Pride Month On June 30th, CPC held a banquet, titled "The Queer Feast: An Intergenerational Pride Dinner", at the Project Reach community center in Chinatown to celebrate Pride Month. The event was joined by about 50 participants to celebrate the efforts made to secure the rights of all LGBTQ+ people.
NYS Secretary of State Visits Brooklyn Community Center On July 5th, CPC Brooklyn Community Services hosted NY Secretary of State Robert Rodriguez for a site visit to see our programs and to discuss how to best support immigrant communities.
