Thomas Mann 'oversees' the creation of the new landform at West Green House

New Beginnings

The Ride and the effects of storm Doris at West Green House

There is just one universal truth when it comes to gardens and gardening: each year is different.

This most definitely applies to West Green House...right from the start of our open season.

The above photo shows Thomas Mann 'supervising' the creation of the new Landform area in the woodland walk. The piles of hardcore and soil are in the process of transformation into an exciting new garden feature.

Elsewhere we are recovering from the effects of storm Doris last month, which brought down several large trees. These are in the process of being removed and the traces of the large vehicles we used can be seen.

The remaining daffodils are quite a sight, especially those lining the woodland walk and the Temple area. The ones by the small pond are yet to reach their peak, so there are delights still to come.

Nature has particularly thinned the canopy in the Garden of Five Bridges and it will be interesting to see how this affects the growth of the new wisteria and clematis which are due to be planted on the renewed bridge timbers shortly.

You Should Have Been Here Last Week...

Literary lunch at West Green House with Tim Richardson

... is a regular comment made by garden owners, though in view of the clearance work in progress, our current favourite phrase is "You should come here next week!"

We're looking forward to a humourous exploration of "You should have been here last week" when we welcome Tim Richardson as our special guest for this year's LITERARY LUNCH on Tuesday, April 25th.

It's the title of his latest book, a collection of Tim's 'sharp cuttings' i.e. his notable columns gathered from the likes of The Telegraph, the Garden Design Journal, and the Financial Times. Tim's chosen topics are amongst the most wide ranging of today's garden writing; intelligent, thought provoking and witty.

He will bring all this and more to West Green House as he is also the founder and Festival Director of the Chelsea Fringe. Now in its sixth year,  the Fringe will celebrate all things gardening from May 20th to June 4th and we've asked Tim to give us a sneak peek!

This column for The Telegraph gives you an insight into Tim's thoughts about gardens and writing about them.

There's a floral gift for mum to take home to continue her special day.

Our Spring Collection

Spring events at West Green House

We have even more events and workshops for your delight this spring.

Tuesday, April 4th sees the return of our SPRING FLOWERS WORKSHOP where Sandra will show you how to create hand tied posies and pretty arrangements. It's a day for beginners and flower enthusiasts alike.

Each year, the garden team plant thousands of tulips at Marylyn's behest, so it's fitting this popular flower has its own spotlight for THE TULIP LUNCH on Tuesday May 2nd. Scandalous, enigmatic, and romantic the tulip creates colour and life in any garden.

And let's not forget Easter, especially as we're also open all day on Easter Monday. Little ones can enjoy our popular OWL AND THE EASTER EGG HUNT on Easter Sunday, where the fun starts from 2pm (no need to book) with a gift for every participant (whilst stocks last).

Further details can be found on our website's Events Page.

Note: All of 2017's Events are bookable online in addition to those mentioned specifically above. This link takes you to our bookings Home page.

News of the Swoose

Gorgeous flowers

Many of you have asked after our swoose since we reopened for the season.

Dom says: "He* flew off with his dad and stepmum over the winter and didn't come back."  However, mum still has the ganders' attention this spring, so who knows what might pop up again in the Lakefield later this year?.

* = or she, we never did find out.
