Issue 1: FY2019 Q2 (October 1, 2018 – January 31, 2019)

Letter from the Director

Welcome to the first edition of the PM&R Research Newsletter! This new, quarterly update from the Research Program will assist in keeping all members of the Department up to date on PM&R research studies, faculty and trainee research accomplishments, important deadlines and information, and exciting events you don’t want to miss. Our goal is to increase transparency, improve communication and provide better access to research resources. Our department hosts diverse research interests, and our faculty, residents, fellows and staff conduct research at multiple locations, including Froedtert Hospital, the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center, and Children’s Hospital, in addition to collaborating with partners at UW-Milwaukee, UW-Madison, Marquette University and beyond!

Our Research Program has made some significant advances over the last year, including the addition of the Research Intensive Track to our Residency Program. Developing this track was a collaborative effort between the Education and Research Programs.  The Research Intensive Track provides an advanced research experience for residents and includes advanced mentorship, protected time, non-competitive funding, and greater expectations for productivity. We have welcomed three residents (Erin Beddows, Michael Harper, Nick Donahue) onto the Research Intensive Track and look forward to continuing to grow our resident research experience.

The Research Program also offers funding opportunities through the Research Administration Committee (RAC). The RAC funds pilot projects up to $5,000 for PM&R faculty members through our Pilot Award Program. The intent of this award is to provide funding to generate necessary preliminary data that will lead to extramural funding or significant improvements to clinical care. The RAC also funds travel to national meetings to present original research through the RAC Travel Award. Although applications for both awards are currently paper-based, we will be taking the application process online beginning July, 2019.  Please contact Moriah Iverson, MS, Program Manager, at miverson@mcw.edu for more information.

We are excited about the opportunity to share information about our Research Program with the Department. Please let us know if you have questions, comments, feedback or suggestions for items to include in future quarterly updates.

Sincerely,

Matt Durand, PhD
Research Director

Scholarly Activity in PM&R

Faculty in PM&R published three peer-review manuscripts and three book chapters this quarter. Our Department was represented in three posters presented at the AAPM&R National Assembly in October, two posters presented at the AAP National Meeting in February in February, and one oral presentation at the International Stroke Conference in February. Our faculty had one grant funded, submitted three grants as Principal Investigators, and submitted four grants as Co-Investigators in collaboration with the Department of Neurology, the Department of Pediatrics at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and Marquette University.  Congratulations and good luck to our applicants!

Please reach out to Moriah Iverson, MS at miverson@mcw.edu if you have any questions regarding grant applications. The Research Program is always available to proofread or assist with development of your manuscripts, posters, grants and any other research related materials.

Research Administration Committee

The Research Administration Committee (RAC) is comprised of PM&R faculty, residents and staff. The purpose of the RAC is to guide research and research administration in the department to facilitate high-quality, novel research that will significantly contribute to our field and to identify strategic ways to use PM&R resources to leverage research growth. The RAC monitors the status of IRB-approved studies, Quality Improvement Reviews conducted by MCW’s Human Research Protection Program, PM&R research events such as Research Grand Rounds and Research Day and offers opportunities for research funding through the PGY2 Research Education Fund, the RAC Pilot Award and the RAC Travel Award. Interested in joining the RAC? Please contact Moriah Iverson for more information on membership!

The RAC Pilot Award budget for FY2019 was $20,000. We have $18,500 in Pilot Award funds remaining through June 30, 2019 and encourage PM&R faculty to apply. Please contact Rachel Minkin for information on the application process. The RAC Pilot Award application process will be moved online beginning July 1, 2019!

The RAC Travel Award budget for FY2019 is $10,000. We have $2,500 remaining through June 30, 2019. Please contact Rachel Minkin for the application form. The RAC Travel Award will also be available online as on July 1, 2019. Travel reimbursement materials can be submitted to Jennifer Nguyen. As a reminder, RAC Travel Award recipients are required to submit their work as a manuscript prior to applying for another RAC Travel Award. We strongly encourage all RAC Travel Award Recipients to submit their work and are happy to assist in that process. Please contact Matt Durand for questions regarding publication.

The PGY2 Research Education Fund has provided the opportunity to send all six PGY2 residents to national conferences this year. Residents will present on their experience at Research Grand Rounds. Many thanks to the John Melvin Endowment for providing this wonderful opportunity for our trainees! Our department is one of the only PM&R residency programs to provide this experience. If you are interested in contributing funds for this important program, please contact Moriah Iverson.

Research Day 2019

Research Day will be held May 16 from noon to 5 p.m. in the Hub for Collaborative Medicine at MCW (Room A1015). Research Day is a time to celebrate the research accomplishments of our graduating trainees as they present on their resident and fellowship research projects. Our trainees are dedicated to advancing cutting-edge patient care through research. Please join us in congratulating them on all of their accomplishments!

We are thrilled to share that Sara Cuccurullo, MD, will be this year’s Research Day keynote speaker. Dr. Cuccurullo is a leader in the field of PM&R, serving as Clinical Professor and Chairman, and Residency Program Director at Rutgers-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School/JFK Medical Center, and is the Medical Director and Vice President of the JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute. She is dedicated to resident education and has taught the Board Review Course for PM&R residents since 1991. Dr. Cuccurullo serves as the Editor in Chief of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Board Review textbook (Demos Publishing) and is the Vice President of the National Residency and Fellowship Program Directors Council for the AAP. She also serves as an invited editor for The American Journal Of PM&R.

Dr. Cuccurullo has multiple publications on a competency model she pioneered and has presented this model nationally at the AAP and the AAPM&R meetings. She cares for patients on the JFK Medical Center Consult Service, where she has collaborated on developing the Total Joint Protocols and Stroke Protocols used in the acute care hospital. We are excited that such a dedicated faculty will be with us to celebrate our graduating trainees! Please contact Rachel Minkin at rminkin@mcw.edu with any questions.
