Click here Milestone year for diabetes serviceIt’s hard to believe that 20 years has passed since five-year-old April Welsh was pictured with Professor Tim Jones in a story about new type 1 diabetes research in The West Australian. Plenty has changed but one constant remains — Professor Jones still works for WA’s only paediatric diabetes service, which celebrates its 50th year of operation this year. The diabetic service at Princess Margaret Hospital was established by Margaret (Pat) Ryan in 1968 and moved to Perth Children’s Hospital earlier this year. Smooth sailing with CGMHeidi Bucktin likes to think of her family’s life as pre and post continuous glucose monitoring – that’s how markedly different the two periods are in their journey of living with daughter Drina's type 1 diabetes. On-call has a new numberThe diabetes service provides an on-call service for families. If you have an urgent matter regarding the medical care of your child with diabetes you are encouraged to call the on-call paging number which has a new number. Transition timesThis time last year Keira Reynolds was in a vastly different place to where she is today. Back then, the Year 6 student was coming to grips with a new type 1 diabetes diagnosis and finishing primary school, uncertain what lay ahead at high school. Merry Christmas! The Children’s Diabetes Centre wishes everyone a safe and relaxing festive break. Special thanks to families who participated in our research – we couldn't do it without you! Here's some tips to help your child stay on target over the holidays. Tandem pump update Tandem pumps are starting to come through the diabetes service at Perth Children's Hospital (PCH). Staff have been given confirmation of about 10 pumps for January and orders will slowly be filled. The hold up was due to high demand for the Tandem pump in Western Australia. This problem is slowly being resolved and the clinic team thanks families for their patience. The Tandem pump is available for children aged six years and older. This is due to FDA approval put forward by the manufacturer and not a recommendation directly from PCH. |
