NBSTSA Announces Phase-In of Two-Year Certification Cycle in 2020The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting has announced that effective January 1, 2020 the phase-in of a two-year certification renewal cycle requirement for both the Certified Surgical Technologist® and the Certified Surgical First Assistant® will begin. For those who are currently in a 4 year certification cycle with an expiration date before 1/1/2020, nothing will change for you until your current certification expiration date. Any renewals from 1/1/2020 going forward will be certified for 2 years. IMPORTANT: When renewing your current certification, you will be required to submit the usual 60 credits for the CST credential or 75 for the CSFA credential. After you are placed on the two-year cycle, the requirements will change as follows: - Certified Surgical Technologist – Completion of 30 continuing education credits and renewal every two years.
- Certified Surgical First Assistant – Completion of 38 continuing education credits and renewal every two years.
- The continuing education requirements on the two-year cycle will include a small number of advanced level/live continuing education credits. More information on this will be developed and available during 2019.
- The current certification renewal fee for either certification is $50. On the two-year cycle, the renewal fee will be $25. For those renewing their certification by retesting, the fees will remain the same for 2020, $399 for AST members and $499 for non-AST members.
- So remember it’s ½, ½, ½, – half the time, half the money, half the credits for those certifying or renewing on or after January 1, 2020.

Did You Know?Did you know we have a Speaker Request Form available? The NBSTSA receives a large volume of requests each year and although every effort is made to accommodate each request we can’t guarantee we will have someone available as we have a limited number of resources for this program. You are encouraged
to submit your application as early as possible, at least 90 days prior to your scheduled event. If accepted, the NBSTSA will send a speaker to your event at no cost with expenses covered including information and promotional giveaways for attendees. For further information or to request a form please email Linda Stewart at linda@nbstsa.org.
