Barnard College Construction Update - March 31, 2016

Dear Neighbor,

The Barnard team began the deconstruction of Lehman Hall last Friday.  As we mentioned in last week’s email, in order to make up some time we lost to delays and to begin the noisier phase by the summer, we have made some scheduling changes.

We are scheduled to work from 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. on weekdays for now, but may occasionally extend till 6:30 p.m.  We are adding work from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. on up to seven Saturdays between April and early June. Please note we have pushed the start time from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. as a result of several suggestions from members of the community. For now, the schedule includes Saturday work on April 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30.  And as we have mentioned before, there will be no work on key days at the end of the semester, including Saturday, May 7; Saturday, May 14; or during Barnard’s reading period, final exams or commencement ceremonies.

You might be wondering about our use of the term deconstruction, instead of demolition. Deconstruction refers to a systematic approach for the removal of the building that allows for salvaging, sorting and recycling the materials instead of simply hauling them to a landfill.

We will begin the deconstruction by removing the exterior bricks on the top floor and working our way down the building. Once we have finished the removal of the façade, we will begin taking down the roof and interior components of the building. We expect to finish by mid-June.

Two Week Look-Ahead

While we have begun preliminary deconstruction work, we expect most of the equipment we will be using during this phase to arrive on campus this Monday, April 4.  A crane will be located on Claremont Avenue for 4-6 hours to move the equipment onto the site and there will be flagmen helping to manage traffic. City regulations regarding the transport and use of cranes require us to have the crane onsite earlier than our usual start time.
